To be worried about DD?

17 months old and first tested positive for covid a fortnight ago. She shook the worst of it off very quickly, was only really unwell for a couple of days but has had a night time cough and also lots of snot ever since - as has the whole household, as we've all had it.
She tested negative more than a week ago. On Thursday she had a mild fever which I put down to teething. Tonight she's got really high fever of 39.8. Is this recurring covid? I'm thinking of finding an OOH doctor's appt in the morning but not sure if I'm over reacting since she's been ok in herself

Follow your instincts you know your child best.

TulipsGarden · 10/04/2022 06:18

Is she still positive on LFT, and does she go to any form of childcare? If she hasn't been in contact with other kids I'd be more worried than if she's at nursery every day.

And does the fever come down with medication? I've found it doesn't very quickly in my 3 year old, which is worrying when it spikes.

HELLITHURT · 10/04/2022 06:18

Take her to OOH, you're worried and she is little.

YukoandHiro · 10/04/2022 06:24

She's negative on LFT but does go to nursery and did go last week so it could be something new she's managed to get

I really, really doubt she has reoccurring COVID but she certainly has ^something. Is her fever responding to calpol? Does she have any other symptoms?

Bizawit · 10/04/2022 06:39

Honestly my toddler picks up something new every couple of weeks! If she’s negative on LFT and goes to nursery , I think it’s overwhelmingly likely to be a new little bug she’s picked up . My little one used to spike fevers that high all the time at that age . NHS has a list of “red flags” to look out for with fever in little ones, so take a look at those, but otherwise I wouldn’t be worried at all. X
YukoandHiro · 10/04/2022 06:48

Thanks everyone. It's probably nothing but I've called to try to get an OOH gp appt as we're supposed to be away for a few days next week and I'd rather have some reassurance I think.

OP posts:
TulipsGarden · 10/04/2022 06:51

Yes, I think it's most likely a new infection too. But if you're worried absolutely get her checked out.

Porcupineintherough · 10/04/2022 07:20

So there is a thing called post COVID inflammatory syndrome that affects a small number of children. The mild version has symptoms that are pretty much the same as for any virus (unhelpful), the serious version is, well, more serious. It might be worth googling the symptoms so that you know what to look out for, although it's far more likely that she's just picked up another bug.

Good call she may need antibiotics
YukoandHiro · 10/04/2022 18:57

Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to call. It took all day to sort the appt via 111 but by the time we got called in to the doctor's room the calpol had worn off and her temp was up to 40. They think she has tonsillitis so we got some antibiotics, and I've also got to drop off a urine sample at our regular surgery tomorrow to rule out UTI too.
Glad I went and hope the antibiotics kick in over the next 24 hours.

Bizawit · 11/04/2022 00:06

Oh gosh tonsillitis is horrid 😨. Hope she feels better soon x

balzamico · 11/04/2022 01:20

My dd is 17 and followed a similar pattern, we put it down to her immune system being low after covid (&lockdowns) and she shook the second cold off pretty quickly.

YukoandHiro · 12/04/2022 00:27

Well we saw a GP on Sunday and I spoke to one today and still feeling awful - she's had almost 48 hours on antibiotics and no improvement and tonight we are once again struggling to get her temp to lower. I'm waiting til 1.30am to see if the nurofen I just gave does anything and if not I'm going to be taking her to a&e

As for our little holiday tomorrow, god knows. My eldest will be so upset if we don't go. It's only in the UK so there will be medical help if we need it but it just makes me so anxious to be juggling all this at once

If anyone is here for solidarity I'd appreciate it... I suffer with health anxiety at the best of times but the last two years have really upset my and my instincts

Hi @YukoandHiro

Sorry to hear your DD is still so unwell. I am up with my DD who is unwell with covid. It's just so awful when they are poorly isn't it. I'm here for a hand hold!

andysgirl22 · 12/04/2022 00:57

I am here for solidarity and a handhold op . How is LO doing now . Onwards and Downwards for her temp i hope. So sorry your going through this xx

andysgirl22 · 12/04/2022 00:58

Pickandmix41 I'm so sorry your lo is poorly also xz

YukoandHiro · 12/04/2022 01:05

Thank you @andysgirl22 and @Pickandmix41

It's just awful when they're ill and frankly this autumn/winter has been hideous for both mine and I've been really wiped out by it. My toddler doesn't sleep v well anyway and still night feeds but adding in all the sleepless nights due to illness has exhausted me.

We just all had covid a fortnight ago and funnily enough they both shrugged it off pretty quickly - it was me and my DH who found it harder to get rid of. Just gutted to be dealing bad illness again less than a week later.

Fx it does feel like she's starting to cool down a bit now so maybe we can get some rest until morning.

Wishing everyone's babes a good healing night's sleep.

It does go like that sometimes! Spring is in the air so hopefully she'll pick up a bit.
