AIBU to hate my new house

DH and I recently moved to a new house. We were in a situation that meant we absolutely had to move as our previous landlord was selling. There was nothing special about our old house - in fact by all accounts the new house would be seen as better.
The old house was in a high crime rate area, had three small bedrooms and just a Living room and kitchen. It wasn’t really big enough, in fairness, for DH and I and our 3 DC. (DS1 is 4, DS2 is 2 and DD is 7 months) and I didn’t ‘love’ it or anything like that. I just tolerated it as our home. It costed us £700 PCM in our area (I live in an area where rent prices aren’t too bad)

Anyway. To cut my rambling slightly - we’ve now moved to a bigger 4 bed house with a separate dining room and living room in the country side. The rent is unfortunately more expensive at £950 pcm but there was nothing else we could do. We kept applying for cheaper rental properties and got literally nowhere due to current high demand.

My main issue is - this house doesn’t have a bath and I don’t know how to work around it. With 3 young DC it is especially difficult. I also used to enjoy bathing at the end of a rough day. Is there any way to work around this?

Another issue is - there are barely any plug sockets in each bedroom. I genuinely don’t know how to safely ‘work around’ this.
All 4 bedrooms are double bedrooms, however there is only one single plug socket per room!

DH thinks I’m just being dramatic but it’s bothering me and becoming taxing. Has anyone else had similar issues? How did you resolve them?

Thanks.

Sorry pressed post by mistake!

Children have monitors etc!

greylace · 10/04/2022 07:24

HELLITHURT If you’d read my full post you’d have seen that I have said we use an extension lead Confused (and could do so in the DC rooms if required) - it really isn’t a big issue.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 10/04/2022 07:24

I don’t know what your shower is like, but I used to fill the base of our shower with water and bathe my three year old in it, as he was frightened of the shower back then. It was shallow, but worked well enough for a while.

Honeymint · 10/04/2022 07:26

If you’ve only moved recently I think it’s absolutely normal to hate a new house. We moved to our current place a year ago now and my husband was smitten with it but I felt so guilty for this feeling that I didn’t like it. It was at least 5-6 months before I started to like it and actually now it’s starting to feel like ‘home’.

I miss a lot about our old house, but there are good things about this one too, I think I just focussed on the things I missed about our old place too much.

If it’s been longer then maybe you could just keep an eye out for a different place, but you may start to love this one over time!

Re: plug sockets, can you get more fitted? I think it’s relatively simple and cheap(ish) to do. An electrician should be able to do it in a couple of hours.

Doris86 · 10/04/2022 07:27

No enough plug sockets and no bath? In the grand scheme of things, very minor issues really.

You could see if the landlord is willing to install more sockets and a bath. Failing you always have the option of moving again if it’s that big a problem for you.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaa2 · 10/04/2022 07:28

About the shower with a baby. I shower with my son all the time (he's 14 months now but been doing it since he was much younger). He sits in one of these. Not directly under the shower stream obviously but he loves it.

Admittedly it's not the best for me. I tend to sit down in the shower opposite him 🤣 but its fine. I just have my own proper shower another time for getting myself clean.

I’m sorry op. I’ve just had a similar situation with landlord selling up. It came at an awful time where I was undergoing medical investigations and was feeling really ill, and has meant endless stress and a change of nursery for our youngest. It’s the 5th time this has happened to us and it doesn’t get easier. Being a private tenant is truly awful! All you can do is try and focus on what’s ahead and not dwell on the old place. Easier said than done, but if the old house was impractical, you may find that over time the new place will grow on you.

As for the bath, lots of suggestions above for the kids. But I get the whole missing the bathtub thing for relaxing. When we lived in a house with only a shower, I’d take a hot one, wrap myself in loads of towels and then lie in the bedroom watching telly for a bit to unwind. Not as nice as a soak in the tub but it’s me time.

Ohmnomnom · 10/04/2022 07:37

I recently bought a foldable bathtub off ebay , best purchase I ever made! The kids absolutely love it. I can fit in it too and I'm almost 6 foot.

It folds flat so I can store it under my bed when not in use. Just be sure to dry it properly between uses so the silicone part doesn't get mouldy.

Also, don't fill it from the electric shower! I bought one of those push on shower attachments that you attach to taps. I attach it to the bathroom sink and fill the bath that way.

carefullycourageous · 10/04/2022 07:42

How do you empty your fold up bath @Ohmnomnom ?

clpsmum · 10/04/2022 07:43

@Newhousesad

Ooh I’ve had a look at the collapsible baths and I honestly might get one. Has anyone else ever used one? Are they any good
My sister in law has one and loves it. Treat yourself and while you're at or get quotes for Extra plug sockets xxxx
User112 · 10/04/2022 07:44

We didn’t have a bath in our old house. We owned the house, but didn’t have the space to put one up. Managed ok with twins! In the early days, they were washed in a tub in the kitchen. Later DH used to hold them and I washed them in the shower.
Have you heard of extension cords? Cost about £8-10.
A 4 bed house for £950? Double bedrooms? That’ll cost over £2500 per month here. You sound really entitled ! Just find some solution and get on with life!!

Ohmnomnom · 10/04/2022 07:52

@carefullycourageous It has a silicone plug at the bottom attached to a short hose. We use it in the shower room so when it's time to empty it I just point the hose at the drain and pull the plug out.

thank you - in the pic it was in front of your TV so I thought you were using it in the lounge!

Booboobagins · 10/04/2022 07:59

I love the idea of a bath you can put anywhere! The collapsible ones look great imo.

In the interim, my mum bathed us in the kitchen sink until we were too big to fit so could you do the same with your smaller DCs?

Well if you're not happy paying £2500 per month, then ask where OP rents and move there?

Rental cost does vary place to place, just because it's cheaper than you'd expect to pay doesn't mean OP is entitled!

3luckystars · 10/04/2022 08:13

I’m absolutely DELIGHTED i found this thread!!! We have been debating getting rid of our bath for so long. we can get a big shower, or small shower over a small bath (because the littlest one still takes baths) and this is the answer now. I’m getting a collapsible bathtub!! Thank you so much. I’m really so happy now.

WonderingWanda · 10/04/2022 08:17

Those both sound very annoying. How long are you planning to stay there? I would ask the landlord if they would consider getting somemore plug sockets added. If they won't do it, would they be open to you payng for this? I know it's not your house but if it improves your life longer term might be worth it and I doubt I will cost too much.

As for the bath, is there room in your bedroom for free standing bath? What about a birthing pool? Or again if you plan to live there long term consider asking if you can redo the bathroom yourself.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/04/2022 08:29

@Aaaabbbcccc have you seen the rental market recently? There’s hardly anything available. If there was a house with a bath I imagine the op would have chosen it! Seriously, why do people have to be so condescending and outright stupid?

dottydodah · 10/04/2022 08:33

It does take time to settle in to a new house .The flexible baths sound good . I would ask the LL if you could get a couple of new sockets .Not too dear and would be worth it. It sounds a lovely position to me .When the weather improves you wont know yourself as DGM would say!

Fluffbutt · 10/04/2022 08:41

We bought a house with no bath. Eventually we had one put in, but for the first few years we bathed DS in an inflatable bath specifically to fit in shower trays. A small paddling pool type thing. DS bathed in it from age 1 to 4.

DropYourSword · 10/04/2022 08:44

Rent somewhere else?

Oh, you genius @Aaaabbbcccc, of course it's so simple and obvious!

JuliaDomna · 10/04/2022 08:48

OP have a shower in my house. I have a blow up bath for my grandchildren. You can also get fold up baths. They work really well.

It will take a while for you to settle in your new house but hang on in there.

BarnDance · 10/04/2022 08:56

You probably feel, like this as you were pushed into moving when you didn't want to. That's happened to me before and I remember feeling the same. You will settle in and start to feel as if this is where you live.

When my dc were little we had a tub in the bottom of the shower as a little bath. Then when they got older we used to put the shower on very lightly and they used to play in the shower with toys sitting on the shower tray. Like they were playing in the rain.

We also had rechargeable bedside lamps similar to this which were really good.
