To think boys clothes are mostly ugly?

Random shower thoughts (or bed thoughts, whatever) at 2am.

I have 4 DS’s. Their ages range from 6 months to 8 years.

I’ve noticed I really struggle to find bright, colourful clothing that I actually like for them. I mostly have to order online from next, frugi, JoJo and similar brands.

Whenever I just pop Into primark quickly I can never see ‘nice’ things for boys. Girls have tonnes but never boys! What’s that all about.

Boys seem to be stuck with camo, cars, dinosaurs or really dark colours. It’s all a tad strange.

AIBU? Has anyone else noticed this too? It drives me crazy Hmm

GAP can also be good, but the one near me is shut now, so don’t know about recently. Basically lots of places!

LondonQueen · 10/04/2022 16:05

I tend to buy plain clothes for DS as the brightly coloured ones are awful. I must admit that I dress him to match his dad all too often😂

Sirzy · 10/04/2022 16:09

M and M direct are pretty good for older boys bits at decent prices too.

YorkshireIndie · 10/04/2022 16:11

Agree! I hate that boys clothes are mostly dark so buy from Frugi, kite etc. my MIL insists on buying my DS dark clothes which I send to nursery in the hope they disappear (they never do despite not being named) 🙄

CatsArePeople · 10/04/2022 16:17

My son loves cats but it's very hard to find cat clothing that isn't pink, sparkly and flimsy.

the same. we need more stuff for cat loving boys!

HRTQueen · 10/04/2022 16:18

I agree haven’t to hunt around for nice bright clothes

I got some lovely things in Asda, Sainsbury’s but once they reaches about 5 they were not as cute

H&M was still good and GAP in the sales

theluckiest · 10/04/2022 16:19
@theluckiest next go up to age 16
Its only on here i see an issue yet in real life a quick google on next and I have seen a packets of boys t shirts in brights and colours and girls in brights and plain no unicorns etc
So the clothes are their
Its like people are looking for an issue
Have you actually ordered anything or tried to for that age though? Hmm

Next and M&S both say that their stuff goes up to age 16 but when you try to order in that size, forget it. It's very often out of stock or non-existent, online or in-store.

As I found out when trying to order over the past year or so pyjamas, onesies, school uniform, clothes for a wedding, etc. etc.

anewway · 10/04/2022 16:21

You think this, but it depends on what you like. It's very extreme for girls either full on pink tutu or very dull neutrals which are unisex really. You have to work hard to find stuff that's not too impractical. My DD has loads of boys joggers as the options for girls are like two pairs. I also personally don't like Disney stuff and do not want Disney shoes ( looking at you Clark's)

So I have Ds's and DD, but I totally miss baby bird at mothercare as that was my go to for brights.

Primary is weird. Last time I was in the UK I popped in for something and every single t-shirt in the older boys/men’s department had a random American place name or sports team on or some reference to the US. Every single one. I found it very bizarre.

It's not just older boys. Primark currently have a large selection of Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers baby bodysuits and sleepsuits.
phoenixrosehere · 10/04/2022 16:53

I think H&M is great for bright coloured clothes. My boys have a wide range of colours from them and I find them pretty reasonable. Saying that, my parents live in the States so also send lots of clothes from there with lots of fun, bright colours. Think Carter’s is one of the brands. I also buy clothes from independent shops in London at Camden Market and Spitalfields. I have my sons’ measurements and sizes saved in my phone so helps when they’re not with me.

anewway · 10/04/2022 16:56

@Topbird29

Have got 2 boys - has got worse as they have got older. Sometimes next or m & s have plain t shirts in a mix if bright colours in a multipack- red, cobalt blue, grey and black for example. Sometimes found good coloured ones in mountain warehouse with different things on. But a lot of places do still have dinosaurs, superheroes or minecraft! And are drudgery colours.
I've been known the give the colors I dislike to the charity shop, but it's annoying when you are on a budget and a multipack is a saving. I dislike my DS like a teenager in black T-shirt or joggers. But as he needs size 7-8 the choices are more limited, the colours more teenage.
phoenixrosehere · 10/04/2022 16:57

My son is mixed race and has light tan skin, he really doesn’t suit sludgy colours but looks beautiful in like bright or pastel colours - I’ve never had this huge struggle people on mumsnet seem to have and have always managed to find blues and pinks and oranges.

Same.

Mumoblue · 10/04/2022 17:00

It’s definitely harder to find bright clothes for boys. I was able to find some nice rainbow things in Next and some bright coloured shirts for my son.

anewway · 10/04/2022 17:05

These are nice and go up to older sizes ... there are a few other T-shirt pack options too

@00100001

Kids pants drive me crazy.

Boys have elasticated cuffs and waistbands, often a decent gusset, and fit well.

Girls get flimsy knickers with bows on them Confused

Try Boden girls knickers. Expensive (get them when they have a 20 percent off voucher code) but great quality, not flimsy and have comfortable and decent elastics. Will only buy these now since we've discovered them.
GoodSoup · 10/04/2022 18:18

And after age 5 Zara seems to think all boys want to wear oversized skate wear!!

Yes! I’ve thought this too. My eldest doesn’t want sweatshirts with ‘New York’ branded on it, or something about skateboarding. I love the kids stuff from Zara but the over 5s clothes are shit.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 10/04/2022 18:31

You need to look off high street

Yes these are more expensive but they are much more ethical, last well and have great resale

This is a Norfolk based shop called the Norse nook

@CatsArePeople

Are you not able/is it possible for you to shop online? I searched ‘boys cat t-shirt’ and found tons of reasonably priced ones, some plain, some bright colourful ones, some cartoony, some abstract. Lots of them.

Mommabear20 · 10/04/2022 18:40

Same! I generally do dress my kids according to their sex, and love girly things on my DD (fairies, unicorns etc) and boyish things on DS (dinosaurs, animals etc) but I do get frustrated about the lack of colour on boys clothes, especially for summer!

Stringervest · 10/04/2022 19:19

I ordered some really nice bright t shirts for DS(2) from Sainsburys today. They have 20% off currently. The girls' stuff is much less nice, didn't find anything I liked for DD.

EdgyNeonAnt · 10/04/2022 19:28

I mostly buy our boys' clothes from Next, Joules and Ralph Lauren. All good quality and a fairly good choice - Next and Joules in particular always seem to have a wide range of colours to choose from.

greylace · 10/04/2022 20:07

@Horcruxe

With girls clothes once you get over 8 years old they become really skimpy.

My daughter is in sizes than her age.
There is very limited dresses or child appropriate outfits left. Even though she is on 7, the options available are really skimpy, show off her belly button, or just look really trashy unless you pay a lot more for the more expensive brands.

I bought her some plain T Shirts. It wasn't obvious til we got home that they were really short at the waist, and show off her belly, similar sized plain T- Shirts in the boys section actually cover their abdomen.

Boden are great for age appropriate clothes in larger sizes. Not cheap at full price but they keep sending me £10 vouchers and there are always codes available too so the clothes end up being a very reasonable price.
Charlavail · 10/04/2022 20:32

A lot of the suggested sites/brands aren't accessible to lots of us. I could no way afford to spend £9 on one t shirt for DS.

Kanaloa · 10/04/2022 20:42

But H&M/Primark/Supermarkets have also been recommended, where you will find cheaper items. Obviously every single thing won’t always be in your price range but there’s been a variety of things recommended.
