To ask why my toes hurt

ThesecondLEM · 09/04/2022 22:11

Specifically, when I'm walking a fair distance in walking boots.

Happened twice now (two lots of boots). Different makes, quite expensive shoes.

Clearly this is a fit issue, but they are not too small.

I'd like to get more boots but we'll ££ if the same happens

Has this happened to anyone else and how can I remedy it?

I have metatarsalgia, pain in the ball of my foot and in my toes after walking. Is it like that? I take ibubrophen and use something like Voltrol to relieve it ; I don't know of any cure.

That does fit to be honest, and I do get plantar fasciitis.

Are you sure your boots aren't too small. Feet swell when you do long hikes. It's recommended to buy walking boots at least half a size bigger than your normal shoe size.

Is the toebox too narrow? I was advised to wear mens hiking boots as my toes would hurt. I wear barefoot hiking boots now and I generally don’t have wide feet.

Sorry I’ve no advice. I bought some lovely comfortable scarpa soft leather boots and they kill my feet. There was no way of knowing this prior to walking in them as they felt so comfortable in the shop and around the house. It’s something to do with the hard flexible soles and the ball of my feet that I don’t experience in any of my other pairs of shoes or boots.

I’m gutted as they weren’t cheap and I’m stuck with them now.

Walking boots too narrow or too small would be my thinking, as I used to suffer from sore toes too. Do you use thick socks? If so you'd need to go up a size to compensate. I go up a full size and wear extra wide in running shoes and walking boots compared to my normal shoes. It might also be worth seeing if you can get walking boots with a foot shaped toe box (rather than tapering) although I don't know if they exist.

I'm on my feet all day at work and don't have this issue so I'm thinking it has to be the boots. Interestingly, mine are scarpa too!

Feet sliding down in the boots so the toenails bash the ends and cause bruising? In which case, do the laces up tighter so feet can't slip.

Fairislefandango · 09/04/2022 22:53

I find I need to wear boots half a size bigger, but with insoles, because I have slim feet and if they are a bit loose in various places my feet slide forwards especially when walking downhill. The half size up provides plenty of toe room and the insole prevents too much movement.

Do you have any trouble with your back? Toe pain can be nerve related too.

gah2teenagers · 09/04/2022 23:34

Do your toenails need cutting. Funny question but they can dig in and cause pain.
