To think milk is causing my depression?

thankgoditstoday · 09/04/2022 18:55

Cut out milk for the past month (was drinking far too much) and started taking different vitamins and was feeling amazing. No anxiety or depression, feeling really motivated and productive. However the past few days I've incorporated milk back in to my diet and the depression is back, I'm feeling so sleepy and grumpy and having to take naps.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I being crazy thinking that milk is to blame for this?

It seems unlikely...? It could be more a motivational thing, that taking control of your diet was giving you a motivational mood boost, like a feeling of achievement and control. You might have had similar results if you focused on some other self control/discipline thing like, choosing to get up earlier each day or cleaning the shower after each use (or something).

Milk is full of hormones which then go in to your body. Therefore it’s very likely this is causing the issue. If you felt amazing cut it out again!

Yanbu

JohannSebastianBach · 09/04/2022 19:18

Personally I would want to try it for longer than a month to be sure.

SMUnz · 09/04/2022 19:21

I think you could be onto something. Someone I know had the same thing with wheat. Congratulations if you have found the cause.

OatmilkandCookies · 09/04/2022 19:24

Yanbu. I've been off dairy for five years nearly and when i did take it, it was giving me awful headaches and making me feel terrible. I've never looked back.

Yotrotro · 09/04/2022 19:29

I've had terrible cystic acne for years, tried lots of meds etc but it was caused by hormone changes taking the pill and it just wasn't going away again. I seen something online about cows milk being full of hormones etc, so I cut it out and within a few days my acne was much improved. If I accidentally get a cow's milk coffee or whatever when I'm out, I'll get a few spots the next day.

It's been about 2 years now and I haven't looked back, so many places have alternatives now so it's not an issue. Other dairy doesn't have the same impact.

i stopped dairy completely for another health issue and within a couple of weeks felt such an improvement in my chronic (years) mood issue that I was able to halve my anti-depressants from the highest dose so definitely possible. Gut inflammation has been linked to mood disorders and gluten and dairy can be a cause of gut inflammation.

I don't drink milk and am never depressed so there's probably something in it

growgrowinggrown · 09/04/2022 20:16

Daft question, is it just milk being cut?
Or will I have to give up cheese, Yoghurt, cream etc?

I was at school with a lovely girl with utterly horrific acne. She’d tried everything and eventually went to a Chinese herbalist who recommended cutting out dairy. Her skin cleared up in a matter of days.
CircesLion · 09/04/2022 20:24

The same happened to me when I gave up gluten, so I believe you!

It makes sense that a system constantly irritated by a low grade intolerance would result in low energy, ergo low mood etc.

SpeedofaSloth · 09/04/2022 20:27

Not daft at all. We cut down on dairy as 2 of us 4 have waaaaaay better digestive health without it, and foundthe other 2 also feel better in subtler ways (for me, I am less snuffly and the other's eczema is calmed).

needhelp34 · 09/04/2022 20:44

It’s quite common to have an milk A1 protein intolerance. Milk in the northern hemisphere has A1 protein in it. The impact it has on the body is pretty catastrophic - far worse than gluten. Not particularly mainstream at the moment. Both my children have it and I’m good at researching things but I struggle to find information. If you wanted to get checked a Kinesiologist who does intolerance testing could tell you.
Listen to your body.

Muminabun · 09/04/2022 20:56

Nutrition facts.org has some information on this as mentioned upthread the inflammation and gut health. Milk is a very processed food and cows have lots of hormones, antibiotics etc so it makes sense that it effects us. I gave up all dairy last week my mood has improved and my nose is less stuffy. I don’t think I’ll be going back I am no longer convinced it is healthy.

TwittleBee · 09/04/2022 20:59

I was the same! Dairy was causing me so many issues that I didn't even realsie until I cut it out of my diet (had to cut it out due to my son being allergic)

andysgirl22 · 09/04/2022 21:05

This is very interesting. It makes sense about the hormone situation. Also i think a lot of diabetics struggle with milk regarding blood sugars (I'm type one personally) and i am wondering if that is not just because of the sugar in milk as previously thought but also due to the hormones as diabetes is a hormone disorder as insulin is a hormone ?? So that sort of makes sense ??

OMG12 · 09/04/2022 21:10

I can believe this. I suddenly started to struggle with dairy after my covid jab. Cut it out feel so much better mentally and physically.

DS2 never drinks milk and is often depressed. Anecdotes aren't data.
Gonnagetgoing · 09/04/2022 21:39

It could be making you depressed due to hormones but due to a close friend self diagnosing herself with gluten intolerance (she actually ended up having a stroke) I’d check this out with a professional before cutting it out completely.

@Gonnagetgoing

How does her diagnosing herself with a gluten intolerance correlate to the stroke????
