Or is £21 a day not enough to cover 3 meals for a student?

This is a language school advertising for people to accommodate students in their homes. I don’t think £21 would be enough to cover breakfast, packed lunch & dinner plus things like extra hot water etc. It’s out of my area anyway but I do wonder if they will get anyone to do it.

It must be bloody difficult to live healthily on £20 a week though esp given recent price rises Ds does ok, he's super fit and eats really cleanly, shops at Aldi or Tesco, definitely doesn't eat crap.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 09/04/2022 19:43

It's plenty
If it's out of your area why are you bothered?

DS (also a student) lives close to 3 supermarkets Lidl, Morrisons and Asda, he gets by on approx £35- £40 a week and thats buying reduced items.

Nope. She eats well. She does like a bargain, and chooses to walk a little bit further to Aldi rather than using the Co-op round the corner. She is my 3rd student, and both said the same re amounts they need to spend. (Hers is slightly more than dc2 who had slightly more than dc1 to allow for inflation). Before dc1 went, we talked with nephews and nieces and other friends already at University to see what they spent and all were similar (well, less, as was a few years ago). They can all cook and understand about eating leftovers or freezing spare portions.

I lived on £20 a WEEK food budget before. Of course it's doable.

I did this a few years ago with short-term European teenage students. Trips 2-4 nights. I was paid then £15 per night per student. Each student had to have their own bed, but no limit on beds in the room.

I had to cover food-wise - breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals were specified as to contents. PLUS transport the students to and from their daily activity.

The idea was that the students experienced typical British food. The only way to "make" money was to offer the cheapest quality food possible (per advice from the organiser). I wouldnt do that. So I offered a range of cold breakfast foods, big choice for packed lunch and I always cooked fresh for their hot evening meal.

I would mostly host 3 students - so 3 lots of bedding/towels to wash and iron (so minimum wage per hour ?). I loved doing it - we met some lovely students. I hope they enjoyed their time. The money I was paid was considered by HMRC (income tax) to be a subsistence allowance. I stopped when I couldnt get the same confirmation from HMRC (Tax Credits). I felt that I earned each time a few pounds per visit. I might do it again - but perhaps would want the students to make their own way to collection points.

Every family I met hosting was doing it for their own reasons but it certainly isnt a money spinner. You need to consider the time involved.

It's plenty if it is just supposed to cover costs for people who are hosting a student because they want to (but don't want to be out of pocket). Not enough to attract someone to do it for the money. But I don't think they would want to?

livingthegoodlife · 10/04/2022 20:08

The school near me only pays £12 a night! It's not enough. I previously hosted in a different area which paid a lot more and loved it. Don't know why this place pays so little.

Is £21 a DAY (£147 a week,) enough to feed one student?

OR

Is £21 a day (£147 a week,) a reasonable amount to charge for board, lodgings, and food?

Which is it @SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows

Because your TWO posts on here say/ask totally different things.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/04/2022 20:16

My food shop this week (from Waitrose!) was £78 for 3 adults and that included done extra treat stuff as dd (19) is back from uni.

When she’s at uni she shops at Aldi and feeds herself for £25-30 a week.

£21 a day is loads!

BritWifeInUSA · 10/04/2022 20:24

It’s to cover costs, it’s not meant to be a career move.

It’s an extra plate on the table and extra person through the shower each day.

It's plenty. Don't know what you eat but it's obviously quite a bit different to what I do.😁
