God I'm really am going mad.
Please can someone help me find an apprenticeship for my daughter. I'm going round in circles on the internet.
She will hopefully have 3 A Levels, and would like to get a degree in psychology, but via an Apprenticeship rather than university.
Is this even possible?
We are around the Oxford/Reading area.

She would like to work with neurodiverse children eventually.
thank you.

These are the approved level 6 (degree level) apprenticeships in the care and education professions:

None lead to a degree in Psychology. So if that's what she wants to do she needs to go to uni the old fashioned way.

I work in careers and I've never seen a psychology degree apprenticeship advertised. And from what I've seen a lot of health and care degree apprenticeships go to people already working in the field eg healthcare assistants doing nursing degrees on the job. There are an increasing number of degree apprenticeships around but it's by no means a given that you can get one. The majority seem to be in things like IT, engineering and finance.

So she needs to think about what's more important to her, the subject or it being an apprenticeship?

Maybe taking a year out and volunteering or applying for care assistant / TA roles with neurodiverse children could be helpful to her.

There is a degree in this www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/clinical-associate-in-psychology-cap-integrated-degree-v1-0
But not sure if this the right route as it's quite new. I am a big believer in apprenticeships as I heavily promote them at work but you really need to research the right pathways.

As per PP, the institute for apprenticeship standards is like the exam board for apprenticeships. They work with select groups of employers to agree what should be on the syllabus. So look on there to see what apprenticeships interest her then search for vacancies. Note that you’ll need to filter to current as they list those currently being developed but not yet approved as well as ones that have been retired.

Also don’t assume that just because she’s got A levels, the apprenticeship should be Level 6 (degree level). It’s a bit like saying , I’ve got A Level English and now I want to do French, so I need a level 6 French qualification. (Sorry, I’ve had a glass of wine and struggling to put a sentence together !). Equally worth searching Higher Apps.

Use Find an Apprenticeship as first port of call in search. But look to see which employers were involved in the standard, and follow them on SM etc. Not all vacancies end up on there.

Also, so competitive. Apparently some are getting 500+ applicants in the SW ! ( could expect that in London , big cities, but SW ?,)

I think Zelda’s one is a post grad apprenticeship ….

goingmadmadmad · 08/04/2022 21:43

Thanks both.
So I'm not going mad, it probably doesn't exist!
She will have to think then. I just want her to have all the options to chose from.
Is Uni the only option then?

Would seem she would need to study the psychology degree via uni and could then go on to a clinical psychologist apprenticeship but I don’t think there is an apprenticeship route straight from A levels. Degree apprenticeship are highly competitive and I work with those doing healthcare related degree apprenticeships. All of them had been working in a related role e.g OT technical instructor/physio assistant for a at least two years prior to the course

Well yes if she wants a degree she'll have to go to uni, get loans, apply through UCAS, the whole thing.

If she wants to work with ND children what does that actually look like? She could just be a TA on NMW once she's finished her A levels and non done.

Obvs doing a BPS accredited degree and relevant post-grad experience will give her far more options.
