To leave my job?

I have a 14m old DS. Plan to start trying for baby #2 imminently.

I have been head hunted by a new company. They've been running 3 years but doing very very well huge client base etc. Would be a step down in role (eg not managing people, lower title) but they will match my salary as they really want me specifically to do this role.

Less stress, Wfh, flexible hours etc (I work in a pretty inflexible corporate organisation at the moment).

But I have a good job currently and have been in my company 10 years so well respected. They did not treat anyone very well over covid and I've lost respect for the business. Also their inflexibility, lack of support around wanting to work 3 days (I had to really fight for it) has made me feel undervalued and not very motivated to work for the company.

Do I be honest with new company about wanting another baby soon and see what their maternity package is (and how long I have to be there to qualify for it)? It's a friend of mine headhunting me and he knows I want more children and said that's totally cool and they support that (but I imagine he's thinking a few years down the line whereas we want another ASAP! And I can't wait due to age).

I like the sound of the new job but particularly like the idea of less stress and wfh.

What would you do?

This sounds like a no brainer.

Same pay but superior benefits. The question is: are you ok with not being a people manager anymore? (this can be a tricky mental transition sometimes because you feel like you lost status).

I'd go for it. Could you survive minimal mat leave pay if it comes to that?

PostingForTrafficz · 08/04/2022 15:45

In my company you only have to be there 6 months to get full maternity package. If I were in your shoes I'd take the Job now, hold off TTC for 6 months then go for it.

Can you find their maternity leave policy online? In a worst case scenario, could you afford to live on SMP if you didn’t qualify for workplace scheme? I’m public sector (nhs / university) so I don’t know about private sector. If you start with them and they “let you go” if you become pregnant, would that be illegal/discrimination? It might take you a while to get pregnant then you’d have the 7 months or so before you went on mat leave (assuming you get pregnant- sorry if that sounds unkind). I think I’d take the new job and leave it in the hands of fate. Maybe someone with HR experience in the private sector will know more about your potential rights. Good luck!

Ask to see details of the benefits package/policies generally (which should include details of things like pensions in addition to maternity leave policy) saying that you would like to understand the full package. This should flush out the info you need without highlighting that it is the maternity leave that is most interesting to you. Also, you should do this with any job offer anyway🤷‍♀️
