To leave new job for dream job?

My boss said I had only used them as a stopgap until I found something better! Really was not my intention but I was offered my dream job a couple weeks after starting this one. I feel guilty leaving so soon but I'd be stupid to turn down this other offer. I never joined this company thinking I'd be leaving any time soon.

I haven't even got a start date yet, waiting on references and all the checks to go through and I've been told by my boss to not come into work. So that's my income gone then and I still have rent and bills to pay. Other staff have been made to pick up overtime to cover my shifts.

Boss found out literally on the day of the offer being made to me because I had to provide full employment history including current employer and they do checks with all of them.

I applied for dream job before I even applied for the one I've been working at and didn't think I would get it.

Am I really being unreasonable here? I wouldn't have left my old job if I thought my dream job was only round the corner ffs!

No, but you can understand them being pissed off.

Well, they've certainly taken it quite personally. And you'd only been there a couple of weeks?

Is there a lot of training involved in your current/erstwhile job? Maybe boss thinks its better for organisation to cut their losses and let you go right now than spend any more time training you when you're going to leave?

You are fine, you are doing what is right for you, I wouldn't let anyone make you feel bad about it. CONGRATULATIONS!

DirtyDancing · 07/04/2022 23:07

I would want a contract in my hand before anyone contacted my current employer. Not good.

Anyway, don't look back. If it's a 'dream job' old job will be a distant memory.

Don't quite understand why your income has gone- your are entitled to work your notice period, even if they put you on gardening leave.

stopgapjob · 07/04/2022 23:12

I'd already done my training so it's not that really. And I hadn't even had the chance to hand in my notice, I will just be paid for the hours I already worked. And unfortunately due to the nature of the work, they have to complete all these checks before giving me a contract, the offer is conditional until then. So I'm pretty nervous about it all now!

Thank you @bosabosa

I'm about to go through this process (hopefully, anyway) and I too am worried about their reaction. But, if it's your dream job, it'll be worth it. In 5 years' time, do you think you'll regret the decision?

Ohhh good luck! I hope your boss reacts better than mine! And no I won't have any regrets, I know it'll be worth it in the long run. But I've been made to feel so awful about it I can't help feeling guilty.

Good luck with your new role!

You’ve dodged a bullet - if they treat you like this under these circumstances, can only imagine what they would be like over toilet breaks/disabilities/sickness/redundancies etc etc.

I did it too and I'm absolutely loving life. Not unreasonable at all, good for you!! Enjoy it :)
