To do this DIY myself even though I'm a complete novice?

And if I can do it myself, does anyone know how please?

My bath has a shower head handset thingy coming out of it and I want to remove it as it has been nothing but trouble - always breaking!

Is this reasonably easy, ie suitable for a novice, or do I need to get a plumber?

It depends on where you have to drill.

If you are drilling between tiles into grout it’s fine.

Into tiles is trickier and you need a special drillbit.

It’s not particularly hard though.

The thing that connects the shower head to the bath just lifts off! I don't think I'd need to drill to remove that, but then, the hose bit which lives inside the bath iyswim, would have to come out...that's the bit I'm a bit confused about. I don't know how it comes out. It has to be connected to something in there. Maybe the side of the bath has to come off?

Have a look on YouTube. There are tons of DIY tutorial videos on there, and then you'll be better able to gauge whether it's possible for you to do it yourself.

Is it attached to the taps, like all built in? You could replace the whole thing quite easily.

PenelopePufferfish · 07/04/2022 19:47

What would I search for, does anyone know please?

When I search for "shower attachment on bath removal", I get videos about removing shower heads from shower units, which doesn't help with the hose inside the bath issue 🤔

Are you talking about a set of taps with built in shower attachment? If so you probably would need to replace the whole thing with another one, without shower, that fits the holes in your bath. How hard it is will depend mainly on how awkward the access is to where the whole thing is screwed on under the bath. It will probably be quite awkward and might require a selection of wrenches. I would happily do it myself but if you aren't sure, do some investigation and you tubing before you disconnect anything.

It is one that comes out of a little hole on the corner of the bath. I'll try and find a similar one to link - can't upload photos ATM as I've just rejoined today after a break from Mumsnet!

We've got one of these on our bath ( also broken ) we do have an access panel on the bath as it's all tiled in, however, you can't reach the hose and we were told the whole bath would have to be pulled out to repair it, not an option for us as we don't have enough spare tiles.

One plumber did suggest trying a magnet to find the hose but we haven't tried that yet.

Ah balls @UncomfortableSilence. That sounds like a massive job! Our bath just had a panel on the side and no tiles...so maybe that would make it easier

If you remove it entirely it will leave a hole in the bath. Can't you replace the shower head with a new one? It should just unscrew from the hose (don't let go of the hose or it will disappear down the hole! )

PenelopePufferfish · 07/04/2022 20:16

I was going to get a cover for the hole, so that's no issue. I've seen them on other baths I think. It's just getting the hose disconnected and the switch thing to go between tap and shower head I need to turn off or remove or block or something?

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 07/04/2022 21:19

Yes, there will be a valve/connector underneath the bath/panel that you’re going to have to block/switch off. If you don’t block it off, you’ll flood the floor because when you turn on the taps the water will look for the “easiest” escape… and that’ll be under the bath and not up through the taps!

R00K · 07/04/2022 21:46

To do it properly, you will need to replace the bath. Plenty of youtube tutorials showing how to do that.

JengaTower · 07/04/2022 21:56

You'll need to turn the water off at the mains first

I do loads of random DIY and just watch a few different YouTube videos first

You'll be fine
