But without context nobody can answer whether it’s “genuine” or not.

We don’t know who is claiming they won it, what sort of match they’re claiming they won it for, whether they’re even in a team, who the person is they’re lying to, how you’re related to any of it. It just doesn’t make any sense to anyone but you!

ValerieCupcake · 07/04/2022 18:43

@iklboo

We can't help with such little detail to say if it's a scam or not. You've not said what they're claiming the medal is for / from.
I have a vulnerable relative. She is in contact with someone in Nigeria. I am concerned about it. I don't know what it is for other than a "footy medal". She posted the picture on her Facebook page with a comment "congratulations to someone special". I have concerns.

You're being very elusive OP. What's the background?

incognitoforthisone · 07/04/2022 18:44

Someone I know is in conversation with the person who allegedly won this medal.

@ValerieCupcake Yes, but what are they saying they won the medal FOR? At what level are they claiming they play football? Are they claiming to be a professional footballer, are they just saying 'I play football with a local team, I won this medal once'? What country are they claiming to have played in? That also makes a big difference.

Without more detail, your question is fairly meaningless.

On the most basic level, yes, that is definitely a football medal that could easily be won by a grown adult. But unless you give us more detail about exactly what its owner is claiming, nobody can give you any more pointers as to whether they might be lying.

wishitwasaduvetday · 07/04/2022 18:44

YABU it's a medal.

YA also BU for not explaining why you don't believe the person who said they won it.

LoveSpringDaffs · 07/04/2022 18:45

Dear God, I get more out of my goldfish.

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 07/04/2022 18:45

Maybe he won it as part of a local league. how did they get in touch?

CuddlyCactus · 07/04/2022 18:46

@ValerieCupcake
The concerning but is your relative is in contact with stranger from Nigeria on the internetHmm
Whether the medal is genuine is irrelevant

waterlego · 07/04/2022 18:46

Football is popular in Nigeria, I think. No reason to suspect this person is lying about this.

wishitwasaduvetday · 07/04/2022 18:46

So you don't believe the person is genuinely interested in your relative. They might not be. But they may well have won the medal.

iklboo · 07/04/2022 18:46

If it's local league, 5 a side etc it's very likely NOT searchable on the internet - reverse or otherwise. None of DS's are, or my cousin's daughter's football medals.

UsernameAlwaysTaken · 07/04/2022 18:46

From your recent update, I'd say there are much bigger concerns than if a medal is real or not.

Haus1234 · 07/04/2022 18:47

It’s certainly possible that a person has both won a low level football medal and be trying to scam your relative out of money by pretending to be in a relationship. I don’t think the medal is really the issue.

ValerieCupcake · 07/04/2022 18:47

@wishitwasaduvetday

I've said why above. One of my relatives who is very vulnerable is in contact with a much younger man in Nigeria. If he is who he says he is. She posted this on her page with comments. I'm worried for her. I don't know any more details. I thought they had made the medal themselves. I have no more to go on than that.

Even for a local league it looks unlikely.

Third edition is nonsensical and Football competition also sounds wrong.

Local medals usually list the league/group/team or similar and definitely the year.

Possibly a newspaper or online fantasy football medal?

incognitoforthisone · 07/04/2022 18:48

I don't know what it is for other than a "footy medal".

Yes, that's definitely a football medal that could easily be won by a grown adult playing lower league/non league football in Nigeria.

If you want to prove to your relative that the man she's talking to isn't genuine, then you'll definitely have to find some other evidence because this medal is a perfectly normal football medal and not something that will prove he is lying. I'm not saying he did win it, but he certainly could have.

Yes. I was trying to get some detail to show to my aunt. She has never discussed it with me. But she has posted it on Facebook. On her page without tagging anyone.

@ValerieCupcake, maybe you are concerned that medal person's next move is going to be "Look, I am so talented. I have won this medal, even though I am very poor. Imagine how far I could go if someone (you) would sponsor me?"

That would be of concern to me too.

Sapphirejane · 07/04/2022 18:52

Someone can be a scammer and also win a local football medal. I am not sure how this photo would prove anything?

BlanketsBanned · 07/04/2022 18:52

How did the contact between them happen in the first place, is she being asked to s3nd him money. Is there a reason she is on his fb page.

Hunderland · 07/04/2022 18:53

Well it is A football medal so that bit looks true.

I'd concentrate on other things you find unbelievable with your relative's friend if I were you.

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy OP says the owner of the medal is in Nigeria so it may well not have been designed by an English speaker - and it could easily just be for a fun five-aside thing between a couple of workplaces or something.

I totally agree it's obviously for something really crappy, but the OP doesn't seem to know whether its owner has actually claimed any different.

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/04/2022 18:54

It doesn’t really matter whether the medal is genuine or not, the same “rules” apply to talking to somebody who says they’re in Nigeria as to somebody who says they live in the next town over to you: don’t tell them any personal information or give them your bank details; don’t send them any money, however desperate they tell you they are; take everything they tell you with a pinch of salt until you actually meet.

If this woman is vulnerable (learning disability?) then that’s what her family need to be drumming into her, not faffing about googling medals.

Yes I am indeed. I have found the person's Facebook. Not much to go on there. Lots of pictures of him with football kit on. Also posing with cars. No pictures of medals. Pic of him and another guy with a tiger. The tiger is Photoshopped. He looks in his 20s. My aunt is 63.

I've no idea. I haven't even asked her. I have only seen her posting this on her page. The guy liked the picture and it led me to his Facebook page. I think she was targeted in some way on Facebook. But I don't know how.
