AIBU to be fed up of celebrity worship?

I saw something online recently about “fans” or “stans” as the new generation call them, attacking Cardi B online about not attending the Grammy’s.

I don’t care much for Cardi B to be honest but the point in this thread is to discuss celebrity worship.

Before 2008/2009, we didn’t have unfiltered access to celebrities. We admired and supported them from a distance. That is how it’s supposed to be.

After the invention of Twitter and every social media platform that followed, I feel that it has given “fans” access to celebrities in a manner in which they shouldn’t have.

AIBU to feel that this is wrong?

YANBU, I am bemused by celebrity worship too but I deal with it by laughing at the gullible plebs who have succumbed to it.

@phishy likewise. I think it’s funny and actually quite scary.

Even worse than that is zeleb (z-list) or influencer obsession. I don’t really care about celebrities but I can see how someone could describe themselves as a fan of eg Angelina jolie, she’s talented, been in lots of great films, does charitable/good things. From a lot of things I read/hear about lots of people who have millions of ‘followers’ on social media are ‘famous’ for being famous. They just pose on instagram, post some products, clean their house and/or film their kids. They’re no talented actors, singers, writers, bakers, fashion designers or anything. They are just ‘famous’ because they appeared in two episodes of a reality show in 2015 and now they ‘review’ products sent to them for free or something like that.

What's worse is the z list celebrity worship - Amanda Holden I am looking at you - she portrays herself as if she is some kind of God and sadly she has people fawning over her in her comments like brainwashed idiots. She can't seem to do anything without seeking validation. Her life must be beyond tiring.

What I find annoying is when a celebrity's views on things they are not famous for - say, an actor's political opinions - are treated with reverence. Also the obsession with 'celebrity gossip' - why do people care about the personal lives of people they don't know? Admiring some celebrities is fine but I agree with the OP that some people take it too far.

We don't have proper respectable authority figures anymore, no wise charismatic leaders, only useless politicians. Entertainers seem somehow more truthful, even though they're pretty much bought and sold.
