Shopping for fresh groceries without transport

I'm a single parent in a semi rural area. Poor bus service and I don't drive. No family in area. DC are are at an activity on Saturday mornings so that's my only time to get the weekly grocery shop done.
We eat a lot of fresh produce, natural yogurt and milk.
I'm looking for an online delivery service. I used Iceland from time to time for frozen things and milk, bread, cleaning products but I don't find it that great for fresh fruit and veg. I've got the strawberry punnets from there before and it's about £2 for roughly 6 or 8 hard strawsberries.
I wish Lidl or Aldi did home delivery as I find their fresh items good quality and obs good prices.
Can anyone recommend any good supermarket or other online retails who deliver fresh items for a reasonable price? I've see one on FB called Oddbox but it's £15 for a small fruit box... Seems excessive.
Any other single parents without transport find themselves dashing around on a Saturday morning, paying over the odds on bus fares chasing round just ot get sufficient fresh and healthy food for the week ahead? Wish my Saturdays could be better spend.

Asda, Morrisons, Amazon fresh, ocado

WeCouldBeSpearows · 04/04/2022 15:06

Tesco, Sainsbury's. Waitrose possibly, but probably a bit more expensive.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/04/2022 15:53

Tesco.

You could get most of your groceries, especially the heavy stuff and non perishables, delivered, Morrisons or Asda are probably the cheapest if you can't use Aldi or Lidl.

Then get your fresh stuff each Saturday and get a shopping trolley to maximise the amount you can transport.

Tesco’s is fine. I don’t like Aldi or Lidl personally!

EyespywithmylittleEYE3 · 04/04/2022 16:24

Strawberries are best bought when in season & grown in the country that you live in, ideally grow your own or pick your own

Imported Strawberries 🍓 are tasteless & horrible

RealRaymondReddington · 04/04/2022 16:27

We've found Tesco's to be good quality and value for money.

Does your milkman deliver fresh stuff?
I agree don't buy fruit and veg out of season if you can possibly help it.
Several farm shops around here set up home delivery during lockdown and are competitive price wise; similarly the butcher.Enquire on a local Facebook page and you might find what you are looking for.

Therein lies the problem. One of the main reasons Aldi and Lidl are so well-priced is because they don't deliver.

The actual cost of picking and delivering a typical supermarket order of groceries in a rural area is in the £30-£50 bracket, which nobody is ever going to pay separately as a delivery charge. Tesco, Sainsbury's and so on make it work by having in-store shoppers pay well over the odds to subsidise the online ones. Ocado only sell expensive stuff at higher margins, automate as much as they can, and still lose millions every year.

I've found the trouble with getting fruit and veg delivered is that you don't get to choose your own. E.g. I somehow always get the mankiest potatoes and carrots from Asda. I ppersonally prefer to choose instore.

Anyhow, there's lots of Milkman deliveries which include fruit, etc. E.g.

Have you got a decent market nearby?

We have a few market stalls in the indoor market that deliver fruit and veg boxes. Charge about £20 for a huge amount. You don't get much choice about what is in it although they always contain a good variety of produce.

Sprig1 · 04/04/2022 17:00

Do you have any local veg box delivery companies?

ConsuelaHammock · 04/04/2022 17:04

Asda . And stick to fruit in season. So expensive and quite tasteless at this time of year.

RoseMartha · 04/04/2022 17:07

I like Tesco the best. Have tried Morrisons, asda, sainsburys and ocado in the past.

CottonSock · 04/04/2022 17:09

I vote tesco for overall ease of use of app, substitution policy, the vouchers.

wizbit93 · 04/04/2022 17:42

We use Tesco. They do an Aldi price match with lots of items. Their 89p blueberries taste just the same as the Tesco own £2 ones. If you have a club card lots of things have a reduced price, and you can use clubcard points to buy a delivery pass.
