Bargain hunters and Greed, how much is too much?

If you have ever been on any of the Bargain hunters,Extreme Bargains often revolving around B&M or The Range type shops , in Facebook you’ll know what I mean

Some of the bargain advice is great or it used to be, but im seeing less of those kinds of posts now and more and more of individual people buying obscene amounts of sometimes essential goods definitely clearing shelves and announcing they aren’t donating any and don’t dare shame them, I’ve left a few as the vulgarity of it bothered me,
I do appreciate people can spend their money as they please I really do
But when it’s stuff that’s perishable it seems so wasteful and vulnerable people are going to these shops paid weekly and there’s nothing left Sad

AIBU to be bothered by greed?

I don’t see the problem and yes I know the groups you mean anyone would take a bargain if they see one

Notbeinfunnehbut · 04/04/2022 08:54

I agree to an extent but I’m talking about hundreds of pounds worth of stuff

YANBU

Don’t mind the people who state that the trolley full of x items are going to be passed on to the local refuge (after they’ve kept some).

It’s the twats with their haul of 2p diamanté shite bragging about their plans to flog all 700 items to fund their Range Rover’s new accessories.

Fucking locusts.

It’s the public bragging that pisses me off most. If you’re being such a greedy fucker then don’t show off about it and expect adulation.

00100001 · 04/04/2022 09:11

I just hope that most people are actually lumbered with the crap they buy to sell on

Notbeinfunnehbut · 04/04/2022 11:53

Stath exactly! I saw that article about the woman who bought 32 thermal vests , ….. in a heating crisis Sad

What a loathsome thing to and to brag they aren’t being donated , Angry

People lose their minds and go too far and get greedy. What really upset me was during the covid panic buying, elderly people with empty baskets staring at empty shelves, then the next week photos made it into the papers of wheelie bins overflowing with "out of date"* food that had just been thrown out, where greedy people took everything for themselves and threw it out anyway.

*I used speech marks because it was meat etc that could have been frozen, or cooked and lasted a few more days, and if they didn't have room in their freezers then they were even more greedy and didn't need the food in the first place.

Also I sometimes lurk on hot UK deals, and when a bargain comes up there's always a few twats who exploit the deal by buying 10x cheap laptop to flog on ebay at only slightly under RRP, taking 9 away from people who could really have made use of a bargain when money is tight.

Absolutely YANBU.

I once had an argument in a supermarket on Christmas Eve. Was shopping for last minute fresh bits, and they were reducing a lot of veg etc, including all the remaining bagged salad. I wanted some watercress for a starter I was making and also to go in sandwiches with leftovers. A woman in front of me lifted the entire pallet into her trolley, maybe 30 or 40 bags. I said 'Er... do you think you could maybe spare me one of those bags? I only want to buy one!' in a cheery manner and she said no. She wanted them all because they were reduced to 20p a bag. I said 'I literally just want one bag, though? You can't possibly need 40 bags of watercress over the Christmas period?!' and she announced that she 'Might make soup' with it. I pointed out that she could make soup with 39 bags of watercress just as easily as with 40 bags. She wouldn't have it and just said 'Sorry, I'm not giving up a bargain like this' and flounced off.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2022 12:46

I went to the Next Sale once (never again, and not at 6am or anything ridiculous) but there was a woman with a dustbin liner who was literally filling it without even looking at what she was buying. Confused

The reduced bay in a supermarket is cut throat. I feel so sorry for the staff that have to get in it with the stickers. Sad

YANBU, OP. Greedy fuckers.
I know someone (who lives alone) who posted a picture of their 100+ toilet rolls during the first lockdown. I hope she enjoyed her moment of smugness before loads of people told her what a selfish and greedy cunt she was.

AHungryCaterpillar · 04/04/2022 12:51

Ah apologies I thought you meant like when food is reduced so someone has bought all of it, I’ve seen those ones where something has gone down to 10p so the person has bought the lot, I would if I had seen something like that but not random things I don’t actually need.

SareBear87 · 04/04/2022 12:52

For me it's the attitude, not necessarily the item/quantity.

I totally understand those (for example) that buy loads of yellow labels, and then batch make to feed a small army of family. I loathe those that buy everything then brag "only me and I'm not donating and if I use it great, if I don't it only cost me xxp" - why brag?

It's fine to post bargains but why this awful attitude?

It also annoys me when bargains are posted but extremely area/store specific. Yeah great if you live near by (assuming the OP didn't snaffle the lot) but frustrating when you're 200 miles away and you're store doesn't offer the same!

Notbeinfunnehbut · 04/04/2022 12:55

Someone did that with Baby Milk in the Pandemic, a boot full Angry captioned my baby won’t go hungry….no but other peoples babies will you greedy selfish arsehole.

I've just come off a fb page too, I get people are struggling but every post is about energy increases and I've had enough. We all know the problem and we can't (individually) help so stop repeating everything! I stopped watching the news as it was overwhelmingly about Brexit, covid, Ukraine, no wonder everyone's MH is suffering!

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2022 12:56

If there's a huge quantity of stuff reduced it's just plain selfish to buy it all.

WabbitsAndWeasels · 04/04/2022 12:58

I also assume these are the same people who bought more toilet roll than you could use in 6 months during the early pandemic. I work in a supermarket and to be in with a chance of getting a pack of loo roll I ended up grabbing some off a pallet in the warehouse as I knew there'd be none left at the end of my shift and we were on out last roll at home. These same people then tried to flog it on Facebook, I like to hope no one took them up on the offer. The early pandemic was already so hard but made harder by people buying more than they could possibly need.

It's the same with markdown items, we see the same faces nearly every single day buying more food than their families can eat so they're likely wasting a lot. There are some in genuine need but they're often way more hesitant than the others and will only take what they actually need. We've had people temporarily and permanently banned for bad behaviour around the markdowns (think scratching and fighting) and the regulars often feel entitled to have certain things at a certain price. Fwiw it's hard to colleagues to see people in genuine need lose out because the regulars are too pushy and fast. We'd rather it went to people who would use it all rather than just those looking for a bargain because it's a bargain. I think some of them might actually be chasing the high that getting a bargain gives rather than actually wanting the food.

I think humans are largely selfish and some people think nothing of doing what they want to do because they want to do it and ignore the impact this may have on others. Reselling and social media have become extremely profitable in the last 5 years prompting people to be paid for their selfishness and therefore escalating to get more views or interaction YouTube/Facebook doesn't care if it's positive or negative, it drives ads so they don't care why people are watching/interacting.

Sapphirejane · 04/04/2022 13:04

YANBU OP, I was about to use the baby milk example. I had a baby in lockdown, despite my best efforts couldn’t breastfeed and there was zero support unfortunately. I would lay awake at night worried I had failed my baby and we wouldn’t be able to buy milk to them (fortunately family and friends helped us get milk when we couldn’t get it locally). At the same time there were people bragging they’d bought it to use in their tea or porridge or to give elderly parents (?!).

I can’t stand greed and even more than that people who excuse it. There are lots of things I could do that aren’t against any laws or rules doesn’t mean I should.
