Is it ok to buy my boss a birthday present?

My boss and I get on very well - he’s a man. Absolutely zero flirting or anything inappropriate - both very happily married etc.

But he has been very supportive through a difficult few years and I thought I’d get him a little gift as he turns 60 this year.

He normally gives me wine or champagne on my birthday.

Is this inappropriate? I know gifts normally only go ‘downward’ at work but I wasn’t sure what the consensus would be.

YABU - no gift you twit
YANBU - small gift fine

I buy my boss a gift every year, and Christmas and wedding anniversary. But then I adore my boss. Who goes over and above whats required and then over that too. Also is a nice person.
I've never done this pre this boss, not one boss has ever had as much class and integrity and balls as this one.
So a small gift if you like your boss I think is a great idea.

Having said all that, the general way is that gifts flow down, so if your manager is meh or worse then no dont bother.

I agree that 60th is significant and cool socks for a sock guy and a bottle of wine would make a nice gift. A big joint card suggestion sounds great, too, or you can make a whole birthday video (here are some ideas that can be helpful) instead of a card.
