I’m not in the UK, but I think you also have Too Good To Go? An app where you can buy unsold food from restaurants at the end of service, to prevent it from being thrown away? We use it quite a lot and iyou can get really good restaurant food, and a LOT of it, for just a couple of pounds. Our local bakery also use this app, and today we picked up a huge bag of lovely fresh bread for something like £2.50. And 6 takeaway boxes with thai food for £3. I know it’s been around a while but I only recently discovered it.. 😅

Anyone else use the app and if so what do you get?

@BarbaraofSeville
You have to know when TGTG food is posted, if you see when it sold out then try again a bit less than 24 hours later. Often the same time each day. We mostly do similar to you, cheap curries, chilli, soup, but also get a months worth of organic bakery bread for a fiver on TGTG and freeze it.

i've never heard of TGTG, just had a look and was pleasantly surprised. I live quite rurally so didn't think there'd be anywhere near me but the local independent bakery is on there, as is the M&S at a petrol station, Greggs and Morrisons.

@BarbaraofSeville it’s usually 15 min after their closing time, you can see what time the last one was sold. We cook a lot too, and have no problem cooking good and cheap meals out of what I have in the cupboard, but this is something different. I wouldn’t and couldn’t bake a whole bag of nice bakery bread for a couple of pounds for example.

Learn to forage. TGTG is not great IME. The shops that offer it near me are bakeries who load you up with a ton of unhealthy crap, and the local deli that offers poor value. Last time it was three liters of goat milk that went out of date that day, and some vegetables that were well past their best. Haven’t bothered since.

The Costa TGTG near me is pretty good. It's usually toasties and you get at least 5 in the bag. I freeze them and heat in the oven for lunches.
Morrisons can be hit and miss, I've had some fantastic bags from them, a variety of fruit and veg but also a bag with mostly gluten free bread and cake...

NutsaremyNemesis · 04/04/2022 09:24

I used it a bit last year and had mixed results - Morrison’s boxes are sometimes great, other times poor (half a box of potatoes, 4 saggy cauliflowers and stale bread!). I got two bags from Yo Sushi! at the metro centre once. There was stacks of pre packaged sushi left and I was there at closing time. What I got was amazing - probably £25 worth of sushi for £7 I think. However…. when I asked about what would happen to the rest of the stuff on the shelf they told me it would be binned. When I asked if I could buy it they refused. When I asked if I could have it they refused. They threw food away rather than sell / give it to someone. It annoyed me because that is not the ethos and they were just paying lip service to their marketing bullshit / CSR pledges and clearly didn’t give a shit about actually saving food.

@NutsaremyNemesis that’s pretty crappy..I’d be annoyed too.
