Our supplier has given till the 10th to submit as website and app kept crashing!

AHungryCaterpillar · 03/04/2022 15:09

Do you need to do it if on a smart metre?

It’s been advised to do it whatever meter you have.
jimmyhill · 03/04/2022 15:12

You might pay slightly more for the energy you used between your last read and the price rise, depending on how the energy company calculates your bill. Doubt it will have made a huge difference to anyone but it certainly raised Martin Lewis's profile!

NdefH81 · 03/04/2022 15:13

With bulb

Absolutely nothing from them re requiring one (very good customer service usually hence me wondering what the big deal is. I know that cap lifted but still can’t see actual implications)

I suspect (without evidence, before people pile in) that a lot of the rush was caused by people submitting exaggerated readings in an attempt to get some April use at March rates.

Oh I submitted on the 29th - day I went on holiday

And no one here so no energy used for the 24 hours

So I’ll suck that up!Grin

I tried and failed to submit mine.

First thing on 1 April a man came round to read both. They were certainly quick off the mark

Chely · 03/04/2022 15:15

I didn't read my smart meter. There was advice to make a record in case of dispute but I cba if I'm honest.

Sounding more and more as I suspected

Me too.
ReflectiveJournal · 03/04/2022 15:46

I submitted ours at mid day on the 30, then got an email the next day saying thanks for your reading of the 23rd (which I had also done). 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know at least two people who said they would be doing this

NancyDrawed · 03/04/2022 15:53

I read somewhere that Martin Lewis of Money Saving Expert suggested taking a photo of your meter so that it has a date stamp on whichever device. Then if you can't submit or cba to submit and there is a dispute you have some record of what it was at least

Depends on your household's ability to absorb the new rates.

My teen was saying that this is was a loophole that people could use for a month or so but have to be careful that they don't assume a faulty meter and come out.
TinySaltLick · 03/04/2022 16:04

Hang on - you are concerned that you didn't submit a reading on the 30th, but did on the 29th?!

What could even have happened in 24 hours to cause a problem? Given you were away on the 30th - they will average out at the next meter reading, so a few units will be billed at the old rate not the new rate. So you might find yourself 10p better off?

Less than the value of the time you invested writing this post I would imagine hah

Nomoreusernames1244 · 03/04/2022 16:10

It’s so you don’t get charged at the new expensive rate for units you used prior to the change.

So say you use 2000 units between jan- jun. If the supplier calculates you use the same each month, you’ll use 1000 at the old rate for jan-mar, and a pay the new rate for the 1000 between apr-jun.

When in fact you’ll probably use more between jan-mar because winter demand. So say 1500, and only 500 units at the new rate.

So doing the meter reading before the rates changed means you pay the correct rate at the time you used it.

BloodyRona · 03/04/2022 16:11

About 50p...

ENoeuf · 03/04/2022 16:40

cherryonthecakes yes I guess they are expecting people to do that. We are fixed til May so I’m not really worrying yet.

You don't need to submit a reading if you have a smart meter.
WelshyMaud · 03/04/2022 17:14

Personally I found it extremely irritating with all the ML wannabes on Facebook and Twitter banging on about how it was 'essential' even if you have a smart meter.

No, if you have a smart meter, it wasn't necessary at all. I already know my exact usage for March in units and £ because it updates on my online account on the 1st automatically.

Taking a photo of my meter would do precisely bog all.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 03/04/2022 17:17

It is a mountain out of a molehill if you submitted a meter reading. Our last reading was submitted on 7th March so the impact would be greater. I don’t want to pay inflated prices for energy used in March.

VelvetChairGirl · 03/04/2022 17:19

I did a reading on the 30th, submitted it online, thats it, hope it helped, but I am in the process of being moved as SSE merged with OVO so they said they were moving customers over to OVO and would give me new account numbers etc and a final bill for SSE at somepoint I dont know.

NippyWoowoo · 03/04/2022 21:09

Well for me it increased my new monthly payment Blush my DD has now doubled where initially it had gone up by 50%.

And while yes it's obviously because I used more energy than predicted, in the past when I'd submit my meter readings for the winter months, I'd pay off any outstanding balance immediately to keep my monthly payments the same. But it would only ever be about £40 for the quarter.

But now the buggers have added on an additional £20 per month
