REALLY worried about having 3 teeth removed

QuertyQuordle · 02/04/2022 21:59

Before lockdown I only had one tooth with an issue, a first molar with a root canal. The root canal failed and got infected so I decided on extraction.

However my dentist then said a wisdom tooth on the same side and a third molar on the other side (all top teeth) need removing. Apparently they’d silently died.

I’m bricking the idea of next week having 3 teeth removed and dealing with it (even sedated). I’ve only ever had the work on one tooth.

My jaw will be a mess and swollen on both sides.

I’m really close to saying I just can’t

I had all my wisdom teeth removed at the dentists ( back in the day when this was allowed). It is doable, especially as your teeth are through and no cutting of gums needed.
In my case it wasn't much worse than having a filling. Just expect a bit of tugging, you really shouldn't feel any pain. Good luck x

Thanks

Not something anyone wouldn't worry about!

It should be fine, pain relief, soup and TLC

Flowers, OP. My dentist has recommended one of my molars is removed (it's cracked and uncomfortable). I know it's the best decision but still dithering over it because I'm scared of having a hole at the back of my mouth! Would definitely need to book for a day when I'm not in work for a few days Sad.

Hopefully it will be straightforward and you'll be better after a few days of rest and maximum painkillers.

caecilius1 · 02/04/2022 22:49

Are all 3 coming out in 1 visit under IV sedation?
Not something to particularly look forward to but dental abscesses are horrendous and sometimes need emergency hospital admission, so please don't put the extractions off.
Has your dentist talked to you about what's causing a fairly high rate of caries /decay and have you been prescribed a high fluoride (duraphat) toothpaste ?
Best wishes by the way, the IV sedation has an amnesiac effect, so unlikely you'll remember anything much about the extractions.

ChrissyShenkle · 02/04/2022 23:17

I recently had 2 back teeth out with iv sedation, its fabulous, don't remember a thing, it was like nothing happened, also no pain, the worrying is worse that the procedure, I have a severe dental phobia so I understand

I’m a nervous patient but when I had root canal surgery my dentist advised me to listen to music through headphones on my phone really loudly and I can say it helped massively. He tapped my shoulder if he needed to talk to me.

I had two of my wisdom teeth taken out last year and it was much better than expected. My advice would be to take paracetamol and ibuprofen on a schedule, don't wait til it hurts!

SwelegantParty · 02/04/2022 23:24

I've had top teeth out, they just pop out. Bottom teeth are the ones to worry about.....

Conc1 · 03/04/2022 21:43

I know someone who just got all of their back teeth removed in 1 session. They currently only have their front 4 teeth, top and bottom. They were fine. Took paracetamol for a few days...

Net123456 · 03/04/2022 22:00

I recently had a top wisdom tooth out along with the one next to it, with local anaesthetic. I didn't feel a thing during the appointment and although I worried about how much it was going to hurt when the injections wore off I can honestly say it didn't hurt at all.

Thelnebriati · 03/04/2022 22:01

YANBU to be worried, but its much better to have them all done at the same time than go through healing 3 times imo...ask me how I know!

QuertyQuordle · 06/04/2022 23:07

@caecilius1 no real clue about the sudden decay. I used to be someone with no worries at all, check up after check done into my mid thirties. Then suddenly all at one zero to extractions. I’ve never had a normal filling

Sending a hug 🤗

This is hard. But it will be best for your all round dental health.

I had a molar that had to come out on the top. Was constantly getting infections. I also had two damaged front top teeth due to an accident that had to be removed at the same time.

It was a difficult decision and emotionally painful as well as physically. I thought by the time the day rolled round I was resigned to it.

I sat and cried in the dentist chair before they removed the front ones. But I did go through with it. I had to have a plate, I thought I would never get used to it.

However even six months on there were no more infections. And I could bite into a sandwich again without my teeth wobbling and aching.

It has now been almost 5 years. It was the best decision.

Had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at one go in my early 20s. Never a cavity until 30s. Teeth issues happen. As long as you are confident in your dentist, move forward.

Maybe schedule 2 sessions? Or ensure that you are properly sedated.

I'm dreading my next dental appointment. I'm one of those procrastinators. Like you, never any issues until wisdom teeth at 20s and first cavity in 30s. Now nearly 60 - dreading it all. Some doc when in 40s said to think about Invisalign for ONE TOOTH. No fucking way.

Just take care of your gums, brush and floss teeth. Find doctor who you trust and move forward. Things happen as we age.

hippyfarmer · 06/04/2022 23:59

Need to add, never more than one filling ever for me. So ... yes, things can happen. But, if you don't see where it's coming from ... ask. You didn't have any proper fillings and now are looking at extractions ... ask. Seek a 2nd opinion if possible.

But put the dentist on the hotspot if you've been seeing them all this time. And now you are facing multiple extractions. Ask and don't move forward until you understand and accept.

QuertyQuordle · 07/04/2022 09:25

Just to add. Had them out. Sedation worked, kind dentist.
Amazingly no facial bruise or swelling and no need for painkillers. Weirdest bit was just how numb my mouth was, really took a long time to return. 5 hours later I had a wonky smile and was worried, but it’s fine the next day
