Really bad breast pain

AIBU to be worried sick? I have had very bad breast pain on one side for a week now. GP said as there is no lump there is nothing to worry about - no family history of breast cancer, age not of a concern etc. I'm really anxious it's something sinister and not sure what to do. Should I get a private ultrasound for peace of mind? I've never had breast pain so bad, pain relief not helping, one side only, not related to period. Or could this be totally normal?! Thanks!

My mum's only DCIS symptom was pain. Same for the two ladies I met last week at a farmers market. Always check out anything that is outside of your normal. If the outcome is one of the other things that can cause pain, great news - if not - you might just catch something right on time.

I had pain in my left breast that was agony each month. I had all the checks and a mammogram - and then a biopsy for something apparently unrelated (all fine). They recommended Evening Primrose Oil for the pain. I take the oil and don't feel very much pain now but very glad it was checked properly. I hope you're okay.

Hi @Periodconfusion
did you ever find an answer to this. I’m having similar but it seems to be more certain times of the month/day but no set time and not related to periods.

I had this last year. One side, awful, burning shooting pain (I'm much veinier on that breast, and that side was always much worse when l had PMT - I'm 64 now)
I take both Cocodamol and Ibuprofen for arthritis but they didn't even touch the pain.
After being asked to monitor it for a few weeks 'to see if it settles down on it's own, which it didn't, I was fast tracked for a mammogram and scan. The consultant actually said he could feel a lump when he checked, but both exams showed nothing. Absolutely clear.
Wasn't told anything else to take/do, just sent away with "Don't worry about it."
I did a bit of research online and started taking Evening Primrose capsules.
The pain went within a few days, l couldn't believe it. I still get the odd twinge occasionally, but nothing like it was.
Insist on a referral, OP. Hopefully it'll be nothing, if they don't suggest anything, give the Evening Primrose a try.
Good luck, and l hope it's nothing sinister. Don't let them fob you off, though. See another GP if need be, and don't take no for an answer.

I had this for four months. After 8 weeks got a referral on the two week pathway. I’ve had two mammograms and an ultrasound. It triggered a massive bout of health anxiety as they kept checking me as it was so painful. They have found a small cyst but nothing sinister. I was walking about holding my boob for weeks. I found wearing a sports bra and using ibroprofen gel on the boob helped. Push for a referral, just to ease your mind, but the breast surgeon did say pain was unlikely to be cancer but it’s always best to check x

I think a mammogram is considered the gold standard for initial scan, so if you're going to go private it's probably better to go for a mammogram than an US.

But you may be able to get one through the NHS if you go back and express your concern/desire for it to be soon.

I have breast cancer, and mammogram didn’t see it at all. It was only slightly visible on ultrasound.

Pottymouth83 · 29/01/2023 21:29

Absolutely get it checked - but a friend and I have both experienced breast pain having never had anything like that before, it went into the arm too and it turned out to be hormonal in both our cases.
So do take it seriously but try not to worry as the chances are, it won’t be anything horrid.
