Is this normal re tonsillitis?

5 year old DD has tonsillitis, saw a dr yesterday as she had a really high fever and could barely stand up. They put her on antibiotics for 10 days. However through the night her temp has stayed consistently high despite calpol and neurofen and now she keeps being sick despite having nothing in her as she won't eat!! Is being sick normal with tonsillitis?

Yes in my experience. Whenever I get tonsillitis I vomit. The worst attack I ever had I was vomiting for two weeks, the first course of antibiotics didn’t work and I had to have the dose doubled.
Give it a few days and if she’s no better ring the GP again. Iced water or even just sucking ice helps.

Yes it is. They normally recommend lolly ices for hydration and temp. It's fluid intake and how much she wees that you need to watch. Any sign of dehydration, go to A&E and they'll give anti sickness.

Yes, but make sure you work out if she's getting worse still at 48 hours+. If she the same or better then great - if worse, then the antibiotics aren't working and she needs to see a doctor.

Keep a close eye. DD regularly gets tonsillitis and one time seemed to be getting better but still had a high temperature but within an hour was struggling to breathe and couldn't swallow saliva. She had Quinzy and ended up in hospital for two nights. I called 999 and they acted very quickly when they saw her as it takes hold very fast.

My DS had this, frequently. It's her blood sugar. You need to get her blood sugar up very quickly. Or take her to hospital for IV fluids.

I suffer terrible with tonsillitis that has had me hospitalised with sky high pulse, high temp and unable to eat, drink or swallow my own saliva. This was the second time it had happened to this extent - however the first time it happened the nurse rang me immediately when I got home and warned me that if the antibiotics didn’t take effect within 24hrs to go to a&e because my tonsils were so swollen she was concerned about my airways, I believe she said I actually had Quincy rather than tonsillitis but that was many years ago. I get the usual painful tonsillitis at least once a year.. and always in March!

If you’re concerned, so take her back. I hope she’s feeling better soon!

My DS had recurrent tonsilitis until he finally had them out. He was sick almost every time, although not repeatedly. A temp spike seemed to cause the vomiting for him. Try using a calpol syringe to get small amounts of fluid in every few mins.
If child cannot keep fluids down you really need to call 111 or a+e to make sure they aren't dehydrated.

Yes, that is my experience of tonsilitis with my DS. He was so lethargic he literally couldn't keep his eyes open, the temperature was sky high, and he was sick. Antibiotics kicked in after about 36 hours and he perked up.
