To not want Decathlon advertising on MN

balalake · 02/04/2022 08:02

I keep seeing Decathlon adverts. A company who has only after five weeks of Russian invasion of Ukraine finally withdrawn their business there.

Should they continue to be boycotted and their advertising not accepted?

OP posts:
Fiefofum · 02/04/2022 10:47

Decathlon also sell bullets specifically designed to shoot songbirds (French ‘traditions’) so I have boycotted them for years! Agree on Ukraine too!

deragod · 02/04/2022 11:27

Oh that was quick.
A month ago we had comments how Ukrainians are unfairly treated differently (nope) to Palestinians and Syrians. Where are you now? Never seen this type of comments in thread about Palestine (nothing to compare really but it wasn't me who started...)

And no, most Russians are in favour of the war and Putin so stfu about poor people of Russia. Maybe think about 17years old Liza killed at the door step of her home, raped women who walk to the polish border, twins who were 2 days old when lost both parents.

AtLeastPretendToCare · 02/04/2022 11:29

If you don’t want adverts why not pay for Mumsnet premium?

Whitefire · 02/04/2022 11:48

Mine all about golf and printing, neither of which I have any interest in.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 02/04/2022 11:50

If you carry on boycotting companies who belatedly "do the right thing" then why would they even bother to change? They've made the change requested, so stop boycotting them.

WinniesHunny · 02/04/2022 11:51

I used to be on a forum and one lad kept complaining to the site admin that he kept getting ladyboy adverts. No matter how often we told him the ads were based on his history, he wouldn't listen.

RIP Sharky.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 02/04/2022 12:01

I’m getting Longleat, pure gym and a holiday advert.

SnowyPetals · 02/04/2022 12:07

Oh Good Lord OP, please give over. They have now withdrawn. It isn't as simple as just cutting ties for some businesses, as there is a risk of loss of assets in Russia. Maybe it took longer due to the complexity of their set up there? I have no idea and neither do you.

TheirTheyre · 02/04/2022 12:10

I’ve never seen a decathlon advert on mn.

NippyWoowoo · 02/04/2022 12:11

@RewildingAmbridge

They are personalised, I've never seen a decathlon ad on MN. Currently I'm looking at Boden and made.com ads. Someone on your device has been frequenting the decathlon website OP
I'm currently looking at Lovejunk Rubbish clearance, what does that say about me? 😂 I definitely haven't been browsing 'junk' or any related services. But I am trash.

Do you mean the adverts that pop up in the middle of threads?

This is what I'm seeing in this thread.

If so, they're 'behavioural ads', not companies who've placed an advert directly on Mumsnet, so they're shown to you based on your online activity

No one said Russians were the only victims, or the worst impacted by this war.

Russians have been bombarded with Putin’s anti Ukrainian rhetoric now for years. So yes, unsurprisingly, in the absence of different perspectives, there is support for the war because they believe what they’re being told, that Ukraine is the aggressor. The invasion is condemned in the west because of the information we have it hand. Russians en made do not have that same information.

EcoCustard · 02/04/2022 15:07

@spotcheck Grin
Ridiculous OP, Decathlon aren’t responsible for the invasion of Ukraine and boycotting companies harms Russians who have no control of these decisions, they lose jobs, income etc and no good will come of it. As for banning their advertising why?

Fairyliz · 02/04/2022 15:29

I keep getting ads for pure gym. Is someone trying to tell me something?

WellNotReally · 02/04/2022 15:36

Is it possible to instal one on an iPhone?

Never had a decathlon advert on here - and if anyone ever was likely to, it would be me. DD is obsessed with their tv advert (where all the stuff sings) and listens to it on my phone regularly - she has special needs and has so far never shown any interest in anything on tv before ever. We love it!!

Saucery · 02/04/2022 15:54

Adblockers are wonderful things.

Neverreturntoathread · 02/04/2022 15:55

Hm. China is committing genocide against its ethnic minority population, including abducting people and forcing them to work in concentration camps, carrying out forced sterilisations, etc. Yet we all still buy everything from China. Every covid test you use, most of the clothes you wear. know where it came from? China also invaded and continues to occupy Tibet, a sovereign state.

Boycotting Decathlon isn’t the answer. But I think it would be nice if fewer people looked the other way re China.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 02/04/2022 15:56

Oh grow up and go away with your social media virtue signalling rubbish.

Pumpfive · 02/04/2022 16:09

I'd say 70% of my ads are linked to things I've previously searched but actually some definitely aren't. For example, I've also just had the 'grow your own herbs' ad and I can assure you I've not looked up anything remotely linked to that

TheNameOfTheRoses · 02/04/2022 16:11

I’d say YABU but mainly because I’m in two minds about asking companies such as decathlon to stop trading in Russia. Sam do with Nestle etc… btw.

I get the idea of the sanction but the reality is that people there still need to live and Decathlon is providing basic products (im thinking bicycles , outdoors clothing etc… that everyday people will use - NOT for leisure).
It’s the same with Nestle who produces infant milk etc….

I’m not sure I want something as strict as that that will affect the poorest.

MysweetAudrina · 02/04/2022 16:13

Sometimes I get rodent as with an actual picture of a filthy fucking rat. I have a serious rat phobia and scream every time I see it. I would take Decathlon over this any day.

TheNameOfTheRoses · 02/04/2022 16:13

However, on the other hand, I DO get what you mean. If there is a boycott and all companies are supposed to do so, the decathlon should follow .
