Hi just wondering what cost I maybe looking at for moving within 10 miles with a 4 bedroom house. We are getting quotes and I am shocked at the price.

We're only a 3 bedroom, one of those is a tiny box room and we've had quotes for 2k and £2900, going 13 miles. That includes packing btw

Momijin · 02/04/2022 03:57

I only moved round the corner but it cost £200 for a 4 bedroom house. I did all the packing. This was 3 years ago.

Momijin · 02/04/2022 03:58

If it's too expensive, hire a can and do a few trips

yoyo1234 · 02/04/2022 04:01

Thanks for responses . I'm aiming for anything under £1500. The thing is I think we are getting quotes to early as I have booked of 2 weeks to do the packing and majorly declutter. We are getting quotes but you can tell when the people go round that they don't believe us when we say we will get of loads .

Happy to do the packing, really cannot justify the cost of circa £500 for packing on top .

@Momijin
Thanks I will look into that.

We moved a year ago. We were in a 3 bed with garage full of stuff. Moved less than 2 miles from old house and I think it was 1100-1200. I can't remember exactly. We are in the south 30ish miles outside London

I expect they hear that a lot. Do your clear out then ask them to quote again.
yoyo1234 · 02/04/2022 07:24

@HelloDulling,
That's pretty much what one of them said (we hear that a lot). I think we need to declutter and get more quotes. DH seems to be resigned to the quotes (circa £2000). I really think we need to save money as move costs are really adding up.

Moved recently and a three bed plus garage of crap was £650. South east and we moved about 15 miles away. Have you asked Facebook for recommendations? That’s how we found our movers who are a small local firm rather than a chain or franchise.

Number109 · 02/04/2022 07:36

Have you checked out reallymoving.com?
It’s 7 years since we moved but we got quotes from here and it halved the cost of our removals.

PicaK · 02/04/2022 07:40

Declutter now. That's worth your time and energy as you'll benefit so much in the new place. A long weekend should do it.
Then get quotes.
But pay for packing. So worth it.
And save holiday for when you move in.

yoyo1234 · 02/04/2022 07:49

Thanks for the adviceSmile. Will look into that website.

Unfortunately weekends don't always work as toddler wrangling Wink. So need annual leave and toddler at nursery.

I'm paying £1600 for packing, dismanteling and reassemble of large items & the move. I have a 3 bed with garage. Move is roughly 2.5 miles. Worth every penny in my opinion. I'm in the south east and a single parent so no other adult to help.

Wannabegreenfingers · 02/04/2022 08:08

I had quotes up to £4k for the same job.

Dishwashersaurous · 02/04/2022 08:11

Remember that the main bit is the loading and uploading so cost the same for one mile, or 30 miles. Only really long distances add extra cost.

Given the vacancy rate and staff shortage , in the last few years, then wage rates will have gone up. Plus all other costs.

So would expect £2000 minimum.

Dishwashersaurous · 02/04/2022 08:13

And the extra for them to do everything is probably not that much. They are costing to do it anyway as they don't know what and how well you will pack.

They will pack standard weight boxes etc that they know can stack and how to move

yoyo1234 · 02/04/2022 08:13

Thanks @Wannabegreenfingers it is 4 bed (and small room) but we only have 2 small sofas and 2 beds (1 single) as largest furniture (also one smallish kitchen table and chairs) and 2 X normal bookcases (1 m) I think they are charging a lot.

OP posts:
Dishwashersaurous · 02/04/2022 08:16

How many quotes have you had?
If you have had two or three or saying the same thing then that's unfortunately the market price

Tapsaffweather · 02/04/2022 08:46

We moved last year from a 4 bed house and did our own packing. The company provided the boxes and tape and charged £700-£800, can’t quite remember. I thought it was reasonable and had quotes up to £1500. We’re in Scotland though so maybe cheaper? Best money we spent. They had the house empty in 1.5 hours and the new house filled in the same time again!

Duracellbunnywannabe · 02/04/2022 08:48

Are you selling? If they are going to genuinely declutter most people do it before they put the house on the market and there is only so much you can get rid of in 2 weeks.
