Martin Lewis as Prime Minister

AIBU to wish Martin Lewis would start a political party and run for PM?
If this were the case we'd not be facing a Winter of deaths from cold, malnutrition, starvation and no doubt suicide?

No, he’s too much up his own arse nowadays

SuitcaseOfWhine · 01/04/2022 13:18

I have a feeling Russell Brand might put himself forward.

I do think the next one is going to be a celebrity of sorts with a new party (a real one, not a fake PM or celebrity like Boris).

Anyone who has compassion understands how real people live will get my vote.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 01/04/2022 13:22

Have you not seen the really bad advice he's given out lately? Totally wrong on prepay meters, wrong on swapping energy suppliers. His weekly newsletter is pretty much pointless and there's nothing on it you can't find on other, better sites.

I'm sadly not surprised to see the ridiculous Hugh! Grant! For! PM! either, mainly seem on twitter from the odder fringes of the FBPE crowd (yes I did vote remain). Why, just why? I suppose it's a blessing no one's said Jack Monroe for PM yet.

burnoutbabe · 01/04/2022 13:26

i think he would be great in the house of lords, as a cross bencher, being able to challenge the govt from within.

that would be a good future option.

icelolly12 · 01/04/2022 13:28

Replace Rishi with Martin! How do we start a petition lol

Parky04 · 01/04/2022 13:33

He has already said that the Chancellor has an impossible job and there is no way he would do it!

Bunnybunny1 · 01/04/2022 13:36

I love him so much. It’s just so refreshing to see someone on TV telling the truth. It’s music to my ears. Even when it’s bad news, at least it’s the truth.
These years of lies and corruption are making us all ill.
It would be an amazing palett cleanser to have Martin Lewis in charge.

AffIt · 01/04/2022 13:36

@TinySaltLick

finally update the formatting on his website

Yes! I bloody love Martin Lewis - he's saved me a lot of money over the years - but I am baffled by the fact that somebody who appears to be so savvy doesn't seem aware that website design has moved on considerably since the early 00s. Grin

TenoringBehind · 01/04/2022 13:56

Some of his advice has been terrible

Irridescantshimmmer · 01/04/2022 13:59

Yeah Martin Lewis would get my vote!

longwayoff · 02/04/2022 07:30

Russell Brand? Lord live us and save us. Please, no.

MajesticElephant · 02/04/2022 07:33

Honestly I think he would bankrupt the country. Consumer advice with no consequences is a whole different ball game to public finances.

girlmom21 · 02/04/2022 07:39

He often changes his advice after millions have followed it.

He's trying his best and he does help people sometimes but he's not level-headed enough to be a good PM or precise enough to be chancellor.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/04/2022 07:40

Parts of the establishment must hate him. He's worth over £200 million and yet keeps politician's feet on the fire. They must wonder why he doesn't just leave things alone. But I think it's remarkable that it's people like Martin Lewis and say Marcus Rashford who've done more for society / people in need than actual politicians.

sst1234 · 02/04/2022 07:42

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

And Covid if no one can afford to test
Testing doesn’t make you immune to Covid.
SunshineAndFizz · 02/04/2022 07:45

Martin Lewis is a very good businessman. And his business is finding cheap deals for people. He makes money from this. If you click on a link from his Money Savjng Expert website or email be benefits from this. And the majority of things he promotes are companies he has a commercial agreement with (i.e. they pay him to promote them).

sst1234 · 02/04/2022 07:46

I’m surprised MN is gushing over him. He speaks facts that don’t always fit the ‘progressive’ narrative. Like the fact the student loans are not debt but rather a tax therefore not a bad thing to pit people off from going to university. And the fact that the crazy inflation we are experiencing is because of government policy and lockdowns - if you stop production and give people free money then supply goes down and demand goes up. The Ukraine conflict is a red herring and not the real reason for this. This inflation was coming anyway - especially on energy prices.

olive2621 · 02/04/2022 07:52

In our house we call him 'the shouty man'.
I quite like him though. I met him once and he was very polite and nice.

CorpusCallosum · 02/04/2022 07:55

It's Tim Harford (R4 More or Less, Cautionary Tales podcast) that would get my vote.

Economists with charisma are to my 30s what boys with guitars were to my teens *swoon

balalake · 02/04/2022 07:55

Our political system does not really provide for new political parties, indeed encourages the present two party system.

I am glad that consumer protection and issues get the hearing they deserve in part because of him. If Labour had half a clue then stopping rip offs and poor customer service would be high on their agenda.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/04/2022 08:10

@CorpusCallosum, and my 50s 😊

ChiselandBits · 02/04/2022 08:18

You can be a Marcus Rashfird or ML when you're on the outside only looking at a narrow area. In power you have to deal with a whole lot of other stuff
Look at the Lib Dems. Pre coalition they were v popular, said all the right things that people wanted to hear. Once in a position to actually do something they had to roll it back.. Tuition fees being the obvious example. I don't agree with a lot of gov policy but I think a lot of people have little understanding of how finances work at a national and international level and think the gov should just be able to pay for everything. I agree re Tim Harford.

Valeriekat · 03/04/2022 15:24

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Love the idea of electing someone practical, pragmatic and in touch

I agree!

The fact our system is so sewn up between two parties, but in effect one most of the time, is pretty terrible really!

And worth 123 000 000 I suspect the in touch pragmatism would disappear if he had to run a country.
ApocalypseNowt · 06/04/2022 21:13

I would put Jackie Weaver in charge of education. She seems like a firm hand and an eminently sensible woman.

Love playing fantasy cabinet! Grin

He's always been very open about this. The site costs money to run and the affiliate links are clearly marked so you could just google the product/service separately if you don't want the site to take a cut.

You may also notice that the MSE site does not have adverts on it unlike many others.

Jack Monroe could be minister for childcare and low income families and implement policies that would widen the availability of affordable childcare, especially for shift workers.
