To not know what I want to be when I grow up?

48, 49 soon and looking at working for another 20 years at least given the constant raising of pension age.

My career in hospitality (was management) was wrecked by covid, and now having been out a while I can see how it was wrecking my mental and physical health. 65 hour weeks, stress, never seeing the kids, it was brutal and although I could walk into another job tomorrow (yes Marstons....you were a bit previous sacking all the people you now want back werent you?!) I dont want to. So I am working part time for a supermarket but I need to retrain and do something else, but what?

I have been thinking and thinking and nothing that is remotely realistic (ie will bring in a semi decent wage but wont take years to qualify in) is something I want to do! I fell into the pub game and loved it but in terms of studying, I am more academic than vocational so training in (say) hairdressing or bricklaying or.....landscape gardening wouldnt be my thing. I would love to study history but how on earth will that get me anything than a mountain of debt.....there isnt much called for historians in my town!

Please help me figure out what I can do! I thought about maybe doing accounting technician training and then studying part time to qualify after that but the courses locally are full to bursting and there are almost no jobs advertised so I suspect that there wouldnt be many opportunities there. I do not have the money to start up a business so being employed is my only option.

Would you be interested in project mgt? Nhs are crying out for project support officers and progression if you show drive and an ounce of proactivity is good.

I would actually, but what worries me is that retraining at my age has its own issues because I would be newly qualified and going up against people less than half my age for jobs!

However.....googling now, thank you!
