AIBU NO-ONE Can morally defend Will Smith

If a physical assault happened in any other environment, it would lead to an arrest. So why are so many people defending Will Smith? While Chris Rock’s joke was at best ignorant and at worst spiteful, Will Smith was completely in the wrong. I’m amazed at the many people defending Smith, and I do think that there should be consequences for him. I partly believe that the academy is hesitant to react because they are worried they’re going to be seen as racist if they do.

I just don’t think violence is ever acceptable and no one should be slapped, over anything they say. I just don’t see how it would ever be justified in any other environment, especially a professional one which the Academy Awards are

YABU: Chris Rock deserves everything he got and it is OK to slap someone if they’ve offended you or someone you care about.
YANBU: Will Smith committed assault and should face the consequences.

I think that there is no defence for Will Smith. Yes people have done worse, people can always do worse but that doesn't justify what he did either.
I don't know. Strip all of them of the Oscars, past offenders, Will Smith. In fact get rid of the Oscars its bollocks anyway, and celebrate people who really do something worthwhile.

@Im2022

Don’t really care. But if you’re talking about consequences, then strip Weinstein, Spacey and Woody Allen off their awards and ban them and give James Franco and others like him a life time ban.

Loads of hypocrisy and shit.

Sorry for going off topic but what has James Franco done?

Ah I think I remember seeing something about that. Thanks.

Mocking Will's wife's appearance as a result of her illness? He deserved all he got, and more!
Have a listen to Katherine Ryans podcast - The Slap.

@lljkk

and rape in 2017, that Chris Rock?

You can dislike WS's action without trying to say CR is a chronic victim. Real people are complicated.

Did Jada say she felt humiliated? There's almighty projection to assume any of us knows how she felt. If we're gossiping, I get impression she's the dominant character in that marriage, insisted on it being an open marriage, is boss of the family decisions, etc. She's nobody's inferior.

Yes, although that may not mean that she didn't "need" him to slap CR. Maybe the opposite - maybe that's what she wanted so that's why he did it. Whether that would be due to feeling humiliated or for some other reason I don't know.

Not everyone finds the idea of a partner standing up for them offensive.

There has been many threads on this issue now. Why start another one? FFS.

@Branleuse

Morally, i think it was a bit silly, but really, most people understand that if you insult a man or their wife in front of them, you risk a slap. I dont think its 'right' but I dont really care either. Noone was particularly harmed. I quite like all 3 of them
Agreed

Imagine though if it was a white man who had hit either a black man or a woman.

Or come to that, if a black man had hit a white man.

In any of those scenarios the outcome would have been very different.

montysma1 · 31/03/2022 23:39

I am not defending him. But Rock is as much in the wrongas Smith yet I have heard very little condemnation of him. The woman had every right to go and sit in the award ceremony without being mocked and humiliated by a boorish oaf.
@HumunaHey of course its an illness,. What did you think it was, a lifestyle choice?

It was a display of male toxicity at its worst

It really wasnt. On the scale of male toxicity it barely moved the needle. Go look at the war in Ukraine if you want to see male toxicity at its worst.
@Porcupineintherough It's not an illness by definition. It's a disease. You can have a disease and not be ill. I looked it up for confirmation and I was right.

Porcupineintherough · 01/04/2022 08:24

@HumunaHey

Illness: a disease or period of sickness affecting the body or the mind

I guess we are using different dictionaries

HumunaHey · 01/04/2022 08:51

@Porcupineintherough You can be ill with a disease but having a disease doesn't necessarily mean you are ill.

BowtieBling · 01/04/2022 08:53

Not read the full thread but if someone morally defends a slap they are defending a violent action and their moral compass looks off to me.
