to not get medical treatment

If your child received a 1 inch 3rd degree burn from touching the a hot pan, it went white, but on cleaning looked okay.

Would you take to A&E or go to a walkin the next day?

Would you treat at home and if fine not take to any professional?

This has not happened to me but something made me think.

OP posts:

Ouch.

I would take them to urgent treatment centre if possible.

Have they had pain relief?

MrsMingech · 31/03/2022 17:53

Sorry missed the A&E or walk in.

If it's 3rd degree then the former

SevenWaystoLeave · 31/03/2022 18:02

If it's genuinely a third degree burn it needs medical attention, third degree is a full thickness burn that damages all layers of skin and is unlikely to heal properly if just left.

However honestly your description of it doesn't sound like a third degree burn - who told you it was third degree, if you've not sought medical treatment?

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 31/03/2022 18:04

A 3rd degree burn would be unlikely to look ok.

NHS advice says if the skin is charred white to go to A&E no matter how small the burn so I'd do that.

Babar100 · 31/03/2022 18:05

I wouldn’t be sure what to do so I’d call 111 and get some advice. I know that sometimes burns need to be properly dressed so I’d suspect a trip to GP or walk in centre would be needed.

tiredanddangerous · 31/03/2022 18:06

How do you know it's a 3rd degree burn if it hasn't been looked at?

upanddownandupanddown · 31/03/2022 18:09

Depends where it is also. Certain areas need more attention then others.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/03/2022 18:19

Are you medically trained?

3rs degree is a full thickness burn and almost always need skin grafts, as a mother of a child who suffered 3rd degree burns I’d say it’s idiotic and dangerous to not seek medical attention.

Blimecory · 31/03/2022 18:22

How would a lay person know what a third degree burn looked like? It’s serious and definitely needs a trip to A&E.

Lougle · 31/03/2022 18:23

White is not a good colour for a burn. Pain is good, no pain is bad.

If it's on the hand and it's a child, it needs to be seen regardless.

From NHS site:

Go to a hospital accident and emergency (A&E) department for:

large or deep burns bigger than the affected person's hand
burns of any size that cause white or charred skin
burns on the face, hands, arms, feet, legs or genitals that cause blisters

If the child is under 5.

CoralDaffodil · 31/03/2022 18:25

Agree with all the above. 3rd degree burn would not look ok and would need medical attention.. who diagnosed it as being 3rd degree?

Lougle · 31/03/2022 18:37

Unfortunately, when I spent some time on a burns unit, people said things like "it didn't hurt so I thought it was ok" or "it went white so I thought it would heal on its own".

More superficial burns that hurt and blister got taken more seriously because they wanted the pain to stop and the blistering was alarming.

VisaQuestions · 31/03/2022 18:45

Especially if it’s a hand I’d go

Mamamia7962 · 31/03/2022 18:58

I would take them to A and E. If it's on their hand I would hope that if the child is school age then the teachers would notice it and ring the parent to make sure they got medical treatment.

SageAndButterSpaghetti · 31/03/2022 18:59

What an odd post

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 31/03/2022 19:03

I would always take to a&e for a severe burn however small. Also delayed seeking of medical
Attention will be a red flag.

agree with this appraisal
MrsMingech · 31/03/2022 19:10

That's true, if the OP has enough knowledge to recognise a 3rd degree burn then they have enough to know it needs A&E.

However, it sounds like the OP has seen a nasty burn that is ?3rd degree and worried the child hasn't been seen - reading in between the lines.
In which case YANBU, the child should be seen.
