Weekly Shop Cheaper in Aldi?

Just looking for some tips really!
I currently get most of our grocery/ household shopping from Asda and I am pretty careful with spending. There are some things that I like / are cheaper from Aldi and I go there to stock up on these once a month.
I am always hearing people say that they do all their shopping at Aldi to save money, but when I have done a weekly shop in Adi I perceive that the total is more expensive. Granted - I usually do this online and click and collect, so I might not be seeing all of the deals?
We are a household of three adults (fairly strong appetite) and a toddler. We eat very cheap lunches during the week (at work) but like nice food in the evenings. Vegetarian dinners are absolutely not an option - we are very meat and fish heavy (and I don't really want to hear about the impact this has on the planet / health etc. Plus I do understand that meat costs significantly more than vegetables).
Please give me your tips for shopping cheaply at Aldi!

We have click and collect at the local Aldi so there is a bigger range than you get in some stores. We hardly need to get anything from elsewhere.

I find the fruit and veg as good as from any other supermarket. It saves us a good £50 a week shopping there- it's a huge difference between five of us. Though I'm on a good salary I don't feel I want to spend an extra £50 a week lining the pockets of Tesco or Sainsbury's so I can have a wider choice of baked beans (and I love the Aldi beans anyway).

Plus I find them more interesting and inventive as a business, a more pleasant store to shop in, they change their range and add new things regularly and some of their products you could not get better elsewhere. Particularly their cheddar cheese and wine.

The cheapest things are the Super 6 offers on veg - have a look on their website to see what's on offer that week.

I do a weekly shop at Aldi, 2 adults, occasionally 3 or 4, and occasionally an 8 Yr old. I spend around £60. We aren't brand loyal to anything and mostly cook from scratch. No alcohol usually but all cleaning products. The only things I buy elsewhere are frozen spinach and soya based mince. Aldi sell Quorn but it doesn't suit us.
When we had to isolate just after Christmas, I did an online shop for roughly the same stuff. Cost £90.

Aldi is good if you follow a traditional ‘British’ western diet, throw in a dietary requirement or a panache for cooking anything that isn’t ordinary then I’ve found it’s a bit of a false economy

Nonsense. I eat a low carb Mediteranean diet and am pescetarian, DD1 is vegetarian, I cook Middle Eastern, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Mexican, Indian dishes and we do the vast majority of our food shop in Aldi. We only rarely have "traditional British" food.

I shop in Aldi for most shopping but this week I did it at Lidl as I didn't need very much.

It came to over £30 for not very much!

Then I noticed the large garden pot and the clock for the kitchen I'd bought listed on the receipt.

I really need to stay away from the aisles in the middle of both shops and just stick to the food shelves. Grin

I was in Lidl today and saved quite a lot compared to the same basket in Tesco.. a mixture of meat / fish / drinks / snacks / lunch bits. And I love their bakery! But I would struggle to meal plan or cook from a recipe from there - which I do enjoy - as you just can’t guarantee what ingredients they would have. But if you can figure it out in the store from what’s on offer, I think maybe you can make it work. I’ll definitely be trying to go more often, but couldn’t make it my only shop.
I imagine Aldi is similar.

There's a newish Lidl near me.

Shopped there a few times now.

It's not always cheaper.

This is a bit sad but I took the receipts from Lidl and looked up the prices on Morrisons website to compare and added up the total for both stores. There was a difference but it was only about 15%.

Some items are more £ at Lidl. Eg Burdseye Peas were 30p more. Chopped tomatoes cost the same as at Morrisons because you can buy 4 packs.

Always cheaper in Aldi for me - and I can whizz round in less time than I do in the other supermarkets. I can save anything between £10-20 by going to Aldi (unless I get tempted by the middle aisle of loveliness obviously)

BarbaraofSeville · 31/03/2022 15:20

There was a difference but it was only about 15%

But that's quite a difference. If you spent £85 PW in Lidl instead of £100 in Morrisons, that's a saving of over £60 pm or nearly £800 per year.

If money is tight that could make a significant difference to the amount of spare money you had for more interesting things than basic groceries.

LemonadeSunshine · 31/03/2022 15:25

I do Tesco delivery and ALDI click and collect. I've realized that on the Tesco website you can search for 'aldi price match' and it'll list all the products which are the same price as ALDI.

Wilkolampshade · 31/03/2022 15:34

Bloody love Aldi. Ours is right across the road from a massive Sainsbos so if I need something very specific I can nip over and get it but it's absolutely definitely cheaper. I often do a double take when the total comes up on the till as its reliably 30% lower than my Sainsburys.
Particularly good: frozen tuna steaks, cava, cheese and cured meats.

We do our main shop at either Aldi or Lidl. Occasional trip to M&S and we eat a lot of Asian food so go to an Asian supermarket for spices, curry pastes to and what DH refers to as 'earlobes in tins' Hmm. Haven't set foot in any of the other supermarkets since Christmas.

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 31/03/2022 15:49

We do our main shop in Lidl - so a very similar price point - and find that our shop costs much, much less. That being said, they won't have everything that you need or want, so you do have to top up elsewhere. Even taking that into account, though, it's way cheaper.

Unless you're being trapped by the baskets, of course. There is always something you need in there. Fact.

I am planning on a monthly sains shop for the few things we have their that are to our taste rather than cheaper then weekly at Lidl mostly as we are now in an electric car and they offer cheap charging even for the "superfast" charging, well until we get ours sorted at home

RB68 · 31/03/2022 16:13

what the heck are the ear lobes???

darlingdodo · 31/03/2022 16:18

RB68 - fungus/mushrooms/lotus root - they definitely sometimes look like earlobes......
