Posting in here for traffic as I'm so concerned

About a month ago I suddenly came out with around 25 mouth ulcers within a couple of days. They were so painful I could barely eat or drink and lost half a stone in a week.

GP prescribed a steroid which cleared them up but since then I constantly have about 5 ulcers at a time. They tend to be on the inside of my lips and under my tongue.

GP has now ordered a range of blood tests and I'm awaiting results. But I just keep worrying that there could be something sinister behind this.

I have 2 under 3s and am breastfeeding so I am tired, but surely just being run down can't be causing this!? I've had the odd one before but never anything like this.

Attached photos of what they're like

Ulcers can be caused by a multitude of things, please don't look for answers online, you will only worry yourself more, wishing you a speedy diagnosis and recovery.

I had lots of ulcers one after another and my dentist said I was low in iron, could that be the case?

giftswap2021 · 30/03/2022 18:34

Meant to say, I took iron tablets and the ulcers cleared up

supertedious · 30/03/2022 18:37

They are so painful so I really sympathise. I found iron and Vitamin B complex tablets help me.

Luciemaie · 30/03/2022 18:39

Could it be food related? I’m allergic to tomato’s and come out in lots of ulcers if I eat them.

RandomMess · 30/03/2022 18:48

It's not the first outbreak of herpes is it? Often it happens in your mouth rather than as a cold sore.

You poor thing Thanks

earlydoors42 · 30/03/2022 18:59

Lysine tablets are meant to be good for ulcers too.

WhoWants2Know · 30/03/2022 19:51

My guess would usually be a vitamin deficiency--there are several that can cause mouth ulcers. But allergies can also develop in later life. Oral Allergy Syndrome can occur when the body confuses a food with something like pollen. Then in addition to hay fever there are mouth ulcers too.

Herejustforthisone · 30/03/2022 21:17

I was low in iron and got ulcers. They were awful. Almost as bad as when my rugrat gave me hand, foot and mouth and I couldn’t eat for a week. Please don’t worry, there’s lots of really normal and treatable reasons for them Smile

ProudThrilledHappy · 30/03/2022 21:19

Are you taking regular ibuprofen? I get severe mouth ulcers when I take ibuprofen for more than two days in a row, just a suggestion

trilbydoll · 30/03/2022 21:19

DH used to get terrible ulcers, it seemed to be linked to acid reflux. He cut out caffeine and alcohol and it's pretty much solved both problems.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 30/03/2022 21:20

My mother had the same recently. She had just started using a sensitive toothpaste and was allergic to one of the ingredients. It came on ina couple of weeks but resolved quickly once she went back to a regular paste.

WhatIsThisPlease · 30/03/2022 22:02

In case you're worrying about oral cancer, that can present itself as ulcers on the tongue - but it's one ulcer that doesn't go away not lots of ulcers that come and go.

It's far more likely you're allergic to something or lacking iron.

TrashPanda · 30/03/2022 22:10

I used to get them loads especially when pregnant, breastfeeding and then around my period until my iron & folate levels got better with prescribed supplements.

Relentlessrose · 30/03/2022 22:16

I had mouth ulcers when I was anaemic, resolved from a couple of months of spatone (I don't get on with iron tablets, but spatone was gentler and more effective for me)

Then I had them again a couple of years later, had my iron levels checked all fine. I started supplementing zinc and they resolved.

So I don't think it's always a specific mineral or vitamin, but a sign of being low in something

Thirder · 30/03/2022 22:17

Have you had potatoes recently? If not, have some, whatever in them helps clear mouth ulcers and works for me.

Cameliah · 30/03/2022 22:18

Coeliac disease can often present with mouth ulcers as a symptom.

Relentlessrose · 30/03/2022 22:28

@Thirder

Potatoes have a great nutritional value but get a bad rep. Main one is vitamin C, but loads of other goodies

I get a mouth full of ulcers when I eat gluten.

AnxiousPixie · 30/03/2022 22:29

I get this when my B12 is low. Blood tests will tell. X

Relentlessrose · 30/03/2022 22:31

It would probably be a good idea to get a basic work up at the doctors for the usual offenders (thyroid, inflammation, iron/folate/vitamin d levels, liver function, diabetes 1, maybe celiac markers as well)

Do you eat much probiotic foods?

JaneJeffer · 30/03/2022 22:31

Have you been drinking lots of orange juice?

SoulOfPaddington · 30/03/2022 22:52

I became gluten sensitive after my second baby, but not enough to register gluten intolerant so test for coeliacs was negative. However when I eat wheat I get ulcers. Don't suffer for years like I did

ChickenNugget86 · 30/03/2022 22:57

Go to the dentist, I had ulcers recently but they didn't hurt. My dentist has warned me that I may need a root canal soon to stop the gums from being infected.

Neverendingdust · 30/03/2022 23:05

This is quite odd, I’ve heard of this a few times all very recently OP.

A colleague has gone through exactly the same thing a few weeks ago and I heard of a friend of a friend with it and read someone else on here all at the same time. Mouths full of ulcers. Colleague was also ill with gastro issues and a form of Norovirus and her DP had Covid at the same time too. I had never really heard of it before until the colleague said she was feeling really ill with it. Hope you’re better soon though!
