About (potentially) resigning

Hi all,

I have been offered a new job. I have been unhappy at my current workplace now for a number of months. There have been big internal changes and it's changed a lot compared to the company I joined three years ago.

As such, I have been looking for new opportunities. I was offered a new job back in January. Before accepting, I spoke to my manager and I was promised a new compensation package as well as increased responsibilities if I were to stay.

During the conversations, I expressed why I was becoming unhappy, and the things I'd need to change long-term to stay. Due to the internal changes I now have a different line manager to the one I had when these conversations were had, as my old manager left the business (he was also unhappy with how things had changed at the company over the last few months).

Unfortunately, it has been a struggle as my new manager (who is also new to the business) is micromanaging me obsessively - despite there being no issues with the department I manage. Emails and messages are abrupt, to the point of being rude. It has become incredibly stressful and I am struggling to feel the same passion and drive as I had a year ago.

Last month, however, I was offered a 80% pay increase - this reflects the conversation I had when I was considering accepting a new role, as well as the new responsibilities I have. My pay increase and new responsibilities were overseen by a director of the business and not my new line manager.

Yesterday I was offered a position at a new company. I desperately want to take it, however, due to the pay increase I have now negotiated, I feel bad about leaving so early on after this, especially as I know a lot of effort was put into my pay increase.

Would it bad practice for me to leave so soon after this? And am I being unreasonable to consider moving on?

Don't feel bad, move on. Being micro managed is never a good thing. They might want to pay you more but it sounds like the place is toxic.

No amount of money compensates for being miserable at work .

custardbear · 30/03/2022 05:38

I'd go, new manager sounds awful - take the dream job and move on

AlandAnna · 30/03/2022 05:44

Yup, time to leave - congratulations on the new job!

Jesus no. Do you think they’d feel bad about giving you the chop if you weren’t up to it?! Business is business. Make sure your new salary reflects what you are currently on!

LollyLol · 30/03/2022 05:48

Of course not! It's a business relationship, not a personal one.

You don't have to do a job you don't like if there's a better one you have been offered. You've stuck it out for 3 years; they didn't sort out the problems in time to save you from wanting to leave. Plus you new manager sounds like a nightmare.

A very nice "thank you for the opportunity to work here " resignation letter and head off to your Next Big Thing.

Congrats on the new job btw!

Indigoo03 · 30/03/2022 06:59

Take the new job especially if new job is similar or better benefits, pay and conditions!

Do what is best for you.... companies will also always do what is best for them.

Gnomechange · 30/03/2022 07:19

Resign! Get the champagne on ice!

billy1966 · 30/03/2022 07:25

Resign and move forward.

You owe this company nothing IMO.

HollowTalk · 30/03/2022 07:31

Is the job that you have been offered a similar salary to the 80% increase?
