As above.

I have been assigned quite a few projects that have been stagnant since the beginning of the year, through no fault of our own (waiting for customer which involved national regulatory approval).

My boss is quite eager to progress on these projects so that we can get paid (pay by every milestone achieved). So in every meeting he has been pulling up these projects and ask me for any status update, which is not unreasonable but the fact that he knew there’s no update because it hasn’t been approve and sort of implied that I wasn’t trying my best has peeved me off greatly.

AIBU? Am I being too sensitive?
@Luredbyapomegranate haha you are right about her not being y therapist!

I will mentioned that I am frustrated at the progress all this is taking, considering “we” have done our part, and ask him to suggest anything that can speed thing along.
Is there anything you can think of to speed things up? Ie make things even if you know you might have to redo them if you don't get approval? And ask if that's something they want you to look at.

@KatsuKatsu there is literally nothing! In fact I have moved forward the budget sign off while I should have been waiting for the regulatory approval! (No worries I will make sure our signature go last- when we received the approval).

I hate being passive but there’s a lot of waiting for my role in this company.

What have you been doing in the meantime with your time? Is it worth mentioning that?

Turningpurple · 30/03/2022 09:36

Don't email him about being passive.

Just give your update properly. Can/have you contacted to the customer to find our what the delay is? Asked them if there's anything they need more detail on so they can sign it off? Do they have a timeline?

If you can't do this, have you spoke to someone who can?

They maybe be clients and you can't tell them what to do, but you can influence and try and move it along.

List everything you have done, like pushed the budget sign off etc and what you are doing to try and get client sign off sooner rather than later.

Sounds like you have been doing stuff, but you’re not presenting it correctly. Short summary of progress (or lack of) for each project. If you’ve managed internal budget approval include that and note that it won’t be fully signed off until the other approval is obtained but then it’s good to go. Sounds like the customer has requested changes which is delaying things. Have you looked at what’s been requested and identified the issue? If the customer has requested more than one why weren’t they all requested at the same time. Have you confirmed with the customer that there will be no further requests?

Agree with pp that a note including ‘chased customer on xx/xx/xx ‘ shows that you are being proactive

Do NOT mention being passive, and apologies if that upset you but you’ve taken the feedback on board. Do highlight if you think there’s something your manager could be doing which may help get this moving, and don’t be afraid to run through your next steps and get them to confirm whether there’s anything else they can think of which would help

Thanks to you and all the poster! I sent my manager a timeline with descriptions of what has been achieved so far and what exactly have we been waiting for to sign off the payment. She just told me to relax it happened all the time is out of our hand and is very appreciative of what I managed to achieve so far.

On a side note, the customer has accepted my costing tool with slightly inflated fees to compensate for this loss of time and progress. Really happy about that!
