Currently at home bored out of my mind. I seem to have lost the ability to think of things to do.

Got home with the DC after work at 4.. Helped with Homework, cooked dinner and now they're both locked away in their rooms.
I'm a single parent so it's just me for the evening and after they've gone to bed. I used to love reading but now can't concentrate for longer than 10 minutes. There's nothing I want to watch on TV..
I'm listening to music in the living room with my cat!

What do others do in the evenings? All suggestions welcome

I relax at night after work, I dont get this train of thought you need to be "doing something" for it to be productive. Most nights it watching TV and posting around on my phone with Mumsnet, Facebook etc. I also make cakes and spend some time making sugar models etc, it helps my creative side.

Spring clean and declutter

Startuplife · 29/03/2022 20:29

DP works long hours so although we don’t have any kids I found myself spending a lot of the evenings and weekends sat on the sofa alone.

Last year I started making something I could turn into a small business. To be completely honest, I barely cover the cost of the materials but it keeps me busy and I enjoy it.

LoopyDream · 29/03/2022 20:35

If your concentration can’t do reading what about reading magazines or listening to an audiobook?

BlueFlavour · 29/03/2022 20:36

Keeping a diary? What you want to do, or have done
Or just your thoughts?
Light a candle and just do some deep breathing, maybe a few stretches.

Frollop · 29/03/2022 20:36

This thread reminded me I had planned to have a glass of wine this evening so I'll do that whilst watching You tube.

I'm planning on going out for walks as the evenings get lighter..

Really want to start reading again even if it's getting magazines again.

Netflix can be good.

Will start going to the cinema again..

Agree My problem is that my favourite thing to do is nothing.

But as you're bored, OP, there's free courses on FutureLearn. I'm meant to be doing a poetry one now...oops.

mellicauli · 29/03/2022 20:37

I do an online pilates class - it's very sociable. Also podcasts and audio books. Radio 4

leotardrock · 29/03/2022 20:40

What about gym? You tube exercise routines? Yoga?

OkPedro · 29/03/2022 21:07

Agghh I had tagged you all thanking you for your suggestions and it's disappeared!

@lovemusic33 I've tried tinder, POF and bumble I'd rather stay single 🤭

I took up knitting in the first lockdown but would like to give cross stitch a go actually

I will renew my library card and get stuck into some audiobooks. It's such a pity that I can't concentrate on a book.
I used to love coming home from work and getting lost in whatever I was reading.

I do love to do nothing, but have found myself bored recently with just my own company

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

I find I'm more likely to actually relax if I pre plan for it. Much like meal prepping Grin

So this week dh is away, so I've jotted down a chore, a movie, a relaxing pastime to do each evening ahead of him going.

Tonight was:-
Clean the microwave (environmental health level of Bad)
Watch "The Break Up" with a glass of wine and chocolate
Bath and face mask while listening to the rest of my audio book.

It sounds prescriptive to have to pre plan, but does help.

Also love this idea, and i'm inspired by your categories.

One thing for your home
One thing for your brain
One thing for your body

I might adopt that.

pumpkinpie01 · 29/03/2022 21:14

@OkPedro are the dc old enough to be left on their own for a bit ?

LauriePartridge4Eva · 29/03/2022 21:22

How about getting another job? I work two jobs, both at minimum wage. I have managed to find voluntary work alongside this, without putting my amazing circumstances on Mumsnet. Funny that!

Yeah they are 13 and 10. I haven't left them for longer than an hour because up until late last year they fought like cat and dog! I'm going to slowly build up to leaving them for longer. They are both sensible thankfully

Doing ancestry, tracing family tree online. You have to pay a small subscription, but it’s so interesting. If that’s something that interests you of course...

EddieLee · 29/03/2022 21:50

meet new friends

EmeraldShamrock1 · 29/03/2022 21:53

I feel like that too.
I have lots of ideas things that will definitely improve my life however I've zero motivation for anything. 🙃

BellaVida · 29/03/2022 21:57

There never seems to be time left to do much, but when I’m not flopping on the sofa exhausted I have tried a few things:

  • drawing and painting
  • going for a walk
  • short courses on edX, Coursera etc. (just topics I’m curious about but are not always related to my job)
  • internet surfing
  • watching documentaries or binge-watching series
  • podcasts, TED talks, audiobooks
MakkaPakkas · 29/03/2022 21:58

The thing I miss from being younger is having daft mates to talk shit with. That could take up many an evening.
Round us there are in person art classes you can go to and it's BYOB. One offs like jewelry making and that sort of thing. I always think they'd be fun

savehannah · 29/03/2022 22:01

If you'd fancy learning a language, have a look at Language for Fun, they have lots of teachers running live online classes via Zoom with small groups of people. Much more fun and interactive than trying to do it on your own with books and don't get me started on Duolingo.....

Hollowtree3 · 29/03/2022 22:04

if you can 't concentrate on, and enjoy things you used to enjoy, then I think that is one of the definitions of depression...

cloverlover · 29/03/2022 22:05

OkPedro · 29/03/2022 22:25

@hollowtree3 I'm on anti depressants, I feel they are working.. I think I've just got into a rut. Work, college, kids. Rinse and repeat

Tell your doctor they are doing nothing for you. Other types will.
