How much do you spend on holiday shopping?

Am I BU to feel sick at home much I’ve spent on holiday shopping? Iv’e spent the most on the kids - summer shoes, pool side shoes, swimming costumes, summer clothes, summer hats, sunglasses. They didn’t fit into their summer clothes do I’ve had to buy them stuff. I’ve had to buy swimming accessories such as swim rings.

I’ve had to buy myself some dresses too as I can’t fit into old summer clothes (put weight on recently). I feel really sick at how much I’ve spent. I’ve put some clothes to the side to return tomorrow. I shopped in primary, next , George and H and M

So far I've spent around £150 on clothes for x 2 DC and 5 t-shirts for DP. Kids both still need trainers, swim / pool sandals, some PJs and hats. I reckon that's another £100. Both DP and I need a few bits, again I reckon another £100 - £150 I'm hoping the majority of my summer clothes still fit Grin.

BendingSpoons · 29/03/2022 20:11

Well the good thing is you are going on holiday in April so the clothes will last you all summer. I don't buy much for holiday but we usually go in August so by then we have sufficient clothes.

declutteringmymind · 29/03/2022 20:11

I darent count. Although after a while I trot out the same old stuff for me albeit with a few new things.

The question is, can you afford it? If you can then suck it up and enjoy your hols. If not, take a few things back and maybe have a look in charity shops for extras, or even borrow a few things.

And of course you will use them for the whole season and not the hols.

reluctantbrit · 29/03/2022 20:18

No idea as I don't buy specific holiday clothes. Most of the stuff we take with us are items we buy anyway because existing ones are outgrown, worn out, stained etc.

DD is a teen in adult sizes so there is no need to buy everything new each year. It's her birthday mid-July and she often asks for a new dress which may come with us, depending on what we do for the holiday.

MrsMiddleMother · 29/03/2022 20:18

About 200-300 mainly on the kids with a few new bits for me, their summer clothes never fit the next year where as mine do

Sodullincomparison · 29/03/2022 20:29

We went away for the first time since covid for five days:
Swimsuit/ day clothes/ evening clothes / shoes
About £700 I think but I’d gone for 70% sakes for swimwear since last year.

The last shop for underwear/ white socks/ final accessories was £80 ish

Travis1 · 29/03/2022 20:30

Just whatever is needed. Normally a few hundred on me and less on DH. If it makes you feel better op I’m £100 every 6 weeks for waxing plus an additional £18 fortnightly for facial waxing. Then I’m £54 every 4 weeks for nails. If it’s affordable then that’s what matters. Enjoy your holiday

Riverlee · 29/03/2022 20:32

I never buy myself anything new for holidays, unless it’s worn out. I pack what I already have.

Bickles · 29/03/2022 20:38

I’ve gained weight too and have bought a bikini from fantastie, 2 new bras, 3 new skirts (hush, white stuff, thought), 6 new t shirts (gap, M&S, next), a dress and a jumpsuit (both next). Probably spent £300 altogether.
DS needed new stuff and spent around £150 on shorts, t shirts, short PJs, swimwear etc.
All sorted now!

EssexLioness · 29/03/2022 20:40

Not very much. I don’t buy clothes just for holidays, although sometimes I Amy treat myself to a new dress or top. I am going away in a few weeks time and bought a new swimming costume around £50, because my old one needed replacing. Other than that I have plenty of suitable clothes and shoes. I could comfortably afford to buy new stuff for holidays but find it unnecessary and wasteful to buy when I don’t need to

shivawn · 29/03/2022 20:41

I have no idea but I spend a good bit on new bikinis, dresses etc for every holiday and before I had my baby I used to go away at least 4 times a year.

RoseHarper · 29/03/2022 20:41

Used to spend a fortune but last holiday in 2019 didn't take nearly as much. When kids were small would take way too much, but realistically the kids are in swimsuits all day, you need a few shorts/tees for breakfast and daytime walks and a few outfits to rotate for evenings. I used to take 14 outfits and then extras...madness. last time for me I took 7 evening outfits for 14 days. Minimal shoes/make up etc.

Foolsrule · 29/03/2022 20:47

I don’t get this thread! I’d rather spend more on the holidays themselves 🤣 Just take your usual stuff, a few new t-shirts and shorts for the kids! All of ours have swim stuff anyway so we pack that and they spend most of the week in the pool anyway. We came back at Feb half term with stuff that hadn’t even been worn!

LadyHelenaJustina · 29/03/2022 20:55

I don't buy specifically for holidays. We check what we already have, and buy anything necessary to replace outgrown stuff.

KarenOLantern · 29/03/2022 20:57

I never buy new clothes specifically for a holiday. However, most of what you've mentioned is just general summer clothes that you'd have to buy anyway.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/03/2022 20:59

I'm off on holiday in a few weeks time, for the first time in 3 years. It's an adults only trip, so no children to buy clothes for, but I've spent loads!
It's a combination of my old holiday stuff being a bit past it and not very smart anymore and going away with friends and wanting to treat myself to a few nice new things.

I've bought 2 skirts, tops to go with the skirts, cropped trousers too. And sandals and canvas shoes. And a new hat as I hate my scalp catching the sun.

A lot of that was via ebay though, so maybe £220 inc 3 pairs of shoes that will be well worn the rest of the year too.

Prior to going I'm getting my hair coloured and having a manicure and pedicure! None of that's required, but I'm treating myself.

lifeuphigh · 29/03/2022 21:22

I don’t get this thread either, surely you need the clothes and swimwear for a summer at home anyway?!

shabbalabba · 29/03/2022 21:26

@lifeuphigh I live in Ireland so our summer is hot and miss I don't buy a lot. Swimwear wise I wear a sporty one but I like fancier ones for holidays

lifeuphigh · 29/03/2022 21:41

I live in N Scotland but still have never had to buy special clothes for a holiday. I guess I pack light - I never take more than a few days’ worth of clothes for each family member and wash while we’re there.
Nice swimwear makes sense!

mrsbyers · 29/03/2022 21:42

I’ve just spent about £250 on things for me for a week in the states as I’ve gained weight since last pre Covid holiday

OneCup · 29/03/2022 21:46

£0. Just use existing clothes

Waiting4Spring · 29/03/2022 21:50

The only things I’ve ever bought specifically for a summer holiday are those beach shoes for kids - and only when we’ve gone somewhere with a rocky beach. Otherwise just wear what you’d normally wear in the summer and to the swimming pool. But I am che.

BotterMon · 29/03/2022 21:54

Nothing. When DC were children they had new summer clothes when growing but not sure why people buy specifically for a holiday?

HorribleHerstory · 29/03/2022 21:56

I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything just for a holiday.

Just think of it as seasons change clothing?

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2022 22:05

Beach shoes for DC when they were tiny. DH and I were given two lovely beach towels when we got married, the dc had towelling poncho things when they were tiny and small beach towels as they got bigger. They had shorts and t shirts anyway.

Beach bag = rucksack.
We don't dress up for the evenings non holiday because we are on holiday.
