To make sandwiches the day before they will be eaten?

NdefH81 · 29/03/2022 14:42

Going on holiday next week and thought I’d do sandwiches for us to have at the airport.

I always make sandwiches the day they will be eaten so this is a first for me!

Where do you keep overnight?
Do they not go a bit… dry?
Or better to just set alarm bit earlier and do in the morning!

I often do them the night before and keep in the fridge, wrapped. No issues with anything going dry.

beautifullymad · 29/03/2022 14:50

You can make them days before. Wrap them in brown greaseproof paper then into a zip lock bag in the freezer.

Not all fillings freeze, but lots do. It has the added advantage of doubling as an ice pack to keep your lunch cool.

Celticdawn5 · 29/03/2022 14:51

Depends on the filling. Avoid tomatoes
Frequently used to make the sandwiches the night before and kept in fridge. It was fine.
They stay fresher and taste better wrapped in tin foil and not cling film

SallyWD · 29/03/2022 14:51

I always do this. Wrap them well and they'll be fine.

Alisabeth332 · 29/03/2022 14:52

You would need to store them in the fridge immediately after making them for food safety reasons.

ChoiceMummy · 29/03/2022 14:52

I have done this on many occasions, when we're leaving early.

As long as they're well wrapped, always been great!

SolasAnla · 29/03/2022 14:55

I would avoid egg mixes.
But any filling you keep in the fridge which wont make the bread soggy can be used. You are just storing them in the same place🤷🏼‍♀️

Crunchymum · 29/03/2022 14:56

How long does it take to make sandwiches?

(I say this as someone who does often make them in advance but two of my DC have packed lunches and it just makes sense to make 2 days worth of sandwiches or rolls once I have opened the ingredients, it's not a time saving thing!)

Onionpatch · 29/03/2022 14:57

Avoid wet fillings and i recommend rolls not bread as they dont dry out as quick (still wrap well)

marqueses · 29/03/2022 14:58

Making sandwiches the day before is totally normal isn't it? I can't be the only person who makes my work lunch and school lunches the night before to make the morning easier can I?

All my life my mum then me have done this, I guess I assumed that it was standard practice. The things you learn on mumsnet Grin

HeyItsPickleRick · 29/03/2022 14:58

Well supermarkets do and charge a hefty margin! I always do for DD as I struggle to find time in the morning. I just make sure I butter right up to the edges. Certain breads (like sourdough) last better and fillings like cheese or peanut butter will fare better than egg mayo but I think generally one day before should be fine and very edible!

teenagetantrums · 29/03/2022 14:59

I always did this for kids packed lunches. Agree with previous posters. No tomato's makes bread soggy. Just wrap and put in the fridge.
Let's face it all supermarket sandwiches made at least the day before. Maybe two days

NdefH81 · 29/03/2022 14:59

Brilliant thanks!
Didn’t want to start the holiday off with dry curling sandwiches!

Ok so definitely fridge
And avoid soggy
Tinfoil

Cheers!

You've managed to book a holiday that involves flying but you're unsure about sandwiches?
I seriously wonder how some people get through life.

AlwaysLatte · 29/03/2022 15:05

Interested in the replies as I always make the children's packed lunches in the morning but I do everything else the night before - shoes/bags/kit etc. So it would be handy to make their wraps then too.

No, I know that @NdefH81 my learning today is that someone doesn't know that people make sandwiches in advance Grin

SixteenTwelve · 29/03/2022 15:17

I have been doing this nearly every day of my adult life and before that my mum did it practically every day of my childhood.

Sometimes I even (shock horror) batch make sandwiches to put in the freezer and take them out the day I’m going to eat them.

They taste completely normal and sometimes even better because they have “matured”

When do you think meal deal sarnies are made?

Don’t think she’s flying the plane though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fuggly · 29/03/2022 15:25

when my 3 were in school and i was working FT, I used to make the sandwiches for the week ahead on sunday and freeze them. Always tasted ok.

NdefH81 · 29/03/2022 15:27

I know others do

Which is why I asked for thoughts on storage! this will be a first for ME

Babdoc · 29/03/2022 15:30

They usually sell sandwiches in airports, OP. I used to buy them airside, so they were chilled and completely fresh when I boarded the plane. One less thing to have to organise in advance!

PinkSyCo · 29/03/2022 15:39

You seriously needed to ask where to store fresh, pre-made food overnight? Confused

I am sure MN could have that covered too😂😂
