I just want to start by saying I am by no means opposed to paying full price, nor do I want to undervalue someone for their work, especially those who are self-employed. I am self-employed myself so I understand the struggles etc.
I have been looking into getting a 1-1 tennis coach, I found a lovely, well-reviewed coach who charges £40 per 45 minutes. The coach requires that you book 6 sessions in advance, so the total bill was £240. I was happy to pay the fee. Then, my cousin mentioned she would like to do tennis coaching with me. We have done lots of things together in the past (personal training, pilates). I messaged the coach and asked if my cousin could join our session, the exact same day/time, so it would be 2-1 instead of 1-1. The coach said that was fine, and sent a revised invoice of £480!
I haven't replied yet as I'm not really sure what to say. I'm not expecting the coach to do it for £40 for both of us, but surely asking for double the price (exact same time and day) is unreasonable. When we have done joint lessons before (for example the personal training) we were charged a 1/3 on top, which we were happy to pay... Charging us both £40 each gives us no financial incentive to do it together, we might as well both just do it separately and take up 1 hour and a half of the coaches time?
As said, I am not stingy, I am self-employed myself. If I had two clients prepared to do the same session with little variation I wouldn't charge them both the price for 1-1, there would be some discount involved as I would still be making above my usual rate.
AIBU? Have people had joint lessons before and how does it usually work fee wise?
