To wonder which Credit card gives most benefits eg points, vouchers etc

Hi there all, I love a bargain- who doesn’t?!
My M&S card used to be good for M&S vouchers intermittently, but a couple of years back , maybe longer, they stopped giving much ‘points’ for Non M&S purchases. Now I get about a £2 voucher a year!!

I’d like to change to some card that gives better bonuses.

I always pay the card off fully each month so that aspect of things isn’t the issue.

AIBU to wonder who is getting a nice little bonus or voucher with their CC? Hopefully it might be of interest to others too

I love Tesco. Like you, we always pay in full each month. The rewards aren't as good as they used to be, and the places that take Reward vouchers are significantly more limited than previously, but still well worth it. No idea on the rate you earn points, but generally you get 50p of Tesco vouchers = £1.50 approx to spend at whichever partner. So that's £99 off Cottages.com, it pays for our annual family National Trust membership, it pays for our annual tv guide subscription, it pays for our car breakdown service and also the odd day out here and there.

Lancrelady80 · 29/03/2022 10:19

Plus you can use them at face value at pinch points such as Christmas to take a bit of the sting out.

Thatswhyimacat · 29/03/2022 10:22

I paid for my honeymoon flights with avios points from my BA Amex card.

waltzingparrot · 29/03/2022 10:27

We have Tesco CC card. We put everything on each month and pay off in full. Paid for the Isle of Wight Ferry and our big Christmas shop last year.

Fairyliz · 29/03/2022 11:06

Another vote for Tesco credit card. I pay mine off in full each month and use my points to pay for my mobile (also with Tesco) and my annual rail card.

londonmummy1966 · 29/03/2022 11:10

I have an Amex Platinum which seems to give better cash back than anything else - usually get a decent slug off my post Christmas statement. I do use it for pretty well everything and pay off in full each month.

I've just been reading about putting all regular spends on a credit card and then paying in full each month to make best use of benefits of credit card. Following thread with interest.

Aberration · 30/03/2022 07:49

Amazon we’re giving a £40 voucher on signup. Could sign up then cancel a few months later

I put almost everything on my credit card (Tesco, as pp's said. I uses to get a better rate under older terms and conditions but I think that has changed now) and have a direct debit which pays it off in full each month. I effectively use it as a debit card but with a monthly leeway on paying it. I've done this for years, although now with contactless it gets the previously-cash purchases as well (£2 in co-op etc) as well. I probably spend £500 ish basics (food, fuel, Netflix sub) and £0-£2000 extras (holidays, heating oil, last month dc2 was buying pc parts to build a computer so that all went on there and he paid me back, replacement electrical, clothes, Christmas) maybe averaging an extra £500-£750 pm. I'd say I get around £10-15 club card vouchers a quarter, which I then convert to deals at 3 times face value.

American express if you travel at all.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 30/03/2022 08:21

This is the definitive list of non-Amex cards. Amex are always the best but not everywhere takes them so you'd need a fallback.

We have both John Lewis cards. Works for us as our main shop is at Waitrose and they give decent points for that plus lower points for all other purchases.

We use our cards for everything apart direct debits and general bills. So out bills can be anything from £800 - £2,500 depending what we bought each months. But we pay off in full.

We get JL vouchers three times a year and we use them for shopping at Waitrose mainly unless there is a bigger purchase and JL prices can be competitive.

A friend has American Express and gets Avios points but Amex is not accepted everywhere so he has a back-up Mastercard as well.

Bakingdiva · 30/03/2022 08:55

We have a cash back Barclaycard. Only 0.5% but you get it in cash rather than vouchers / points. I put most spend in it and get £400 per year or so.

I combine that with using Quidco / KidStart and get another couple of hundred (some into children's saving accounts)

AperolWhore · 30/03/2022 09:19

American Express if you want to collect air-miles or Amazon Mastercard if you want Amazon vouchers. Both have really good point rewards. If you buy a lot on Amazon definitely get the Amazon card, I’ve had 2x £10 vouchers since December!

Amex Platinum Cashback pays in cash (actually a deduction from the bill but the same as cash) 0.5% on purchases up to £10k pa and 1% thereafter so if you load as much as you can onto it it is worth it. Interest is swinging so you really do need to pay it off.

I get 0.75% up to £10k and 1.25% over that? £25 annual fee. It's a good deal and I like the fact you get a useful sum once a year.
LordEmsworth · 30/03/2022 11:54

YABU to wonder about it instead of just looking at best-buy tables.

This

I have this card, spend about £400 a month on it plus any big purchases and get about £35 cashback a year. Off the January bill so great for the post Christmas overspending guilt. Money for nothing.

I don't pay the annual fee to get the higher rates, it isn't worth it for me.

You do need a backup, and I have found some shop staff to be unpleasant if you ask whether they take it and they don't.

DoneAdulting · 30/03/2022 12:10

We've been to the USA twice in the last six months using points we earned from the Virgin Atlantic credit card.

londonmummy1966 · 30/03/2022 15:43

@HopeIsNotAStrategy - I have the fee free version although I suspect if I did the sums the fee one would be a better deal as I do put almost everything on it if I possibly can.

canary1 · 30/03/2022 17:04

Thanks so much, this has given me some great ideas for next CCard

Yes, most of our household expenses go through my account at this stage of life, so I put whatever I can on it as well and clear it at the end of the month. It all adds up, together with cashback sites and loyalty schemes etc.

AuntieMarys · 31/03/2022 09:12

We have a John Lewis credit card. I put all purchases on it and pay off each month. We've had £150 of vouchers over 15 months.

Amazon are stopping their existing card (with NewDay) in January 2023.

You can use them in Waitrose or JL. I've used mine to buy some lovely bedding
