To throw the minging mat away?

MIL bought us a new rug a few months ago. We put it in the dining room.

Ever since the dog has decided it’s a new toilet and constantly wees and poos on it. I obviously scrub it each time but the stains are adding up and it stinks. He’s been sick on it a number of times too and this morning had diarrhoea on it. I was trying to scrub it clean (the stain was just smearing right across the rug) when Dh came in, pulled a face and said “that mat is minging”. I said “yes it is, we need to throw it away”.

DH is refusing to throw it away as his mum bought us it. AIBU to think it’s beyond saving now?

Throw it away, it stinks!

Ineedastyleicon · 28/03/2022 21:06

When we got our puppy we ended up throwing every single rug away, they didn't even smell but he just used them all as a toilet!

BridasShieldWall · 28/03/2022 21:06

If DH wants to keep it maybe he should clean it.

Another vote for throwing it away.

SlashBeef · 28/03/2022 21:07

Omg gross get rid! You'd be unreasonable to keep it!

doitwithlove · 28/03/2022 21:08

Throw it away for gawks sake

RewildingAmbridge · 28/03/2022 21:08

Why does your dog have diarrhoea and vomiting so frequently?! I would also throw the rug away but you need to work out the underlying issue with the dog

OutIsay · 28/03/2022 21:08

Throw it away!

Thatsplentyjack · 28/03/2022 21:08

That's disgusting through it away or get it professionally cleaned.

Is your dog OK? That's a lot of sickness and pissing and shitting indoors in a few months.

44PumpLane · 28/03/2022 21:10

Throw it away, and if you do want a rug for the area I highly recommend Ruggable rugs as they come with a machine washable upper and a waterproof under layer!

We have one at the back door and it just gets washed from time to time.

LottyD32 · 28/03/2022 21:11

Do you have separate cars? If you do I'd give it a new home in his car, and never get in it again, if he wants to keep it so badly.

SheilaTheGr3at · 28/03/2022 21:14

Your dog is weeing, pooing, vomiting and having the shits repeatedly all over a rug in your front room and you're asking should you bin it?

I'd be binning the rug and the dog tbh (half jokes about dog!) why can't you house train it and take it to the vet if it's regularly vomiting?

rainyskylight · 28/03/2022 21:26

Your DH can clean it if he refuses to get rid of it. Why are you the only one cleaning the darned thing. And why is the dog sick so often.

StrawberryStarfish · 28/03/2022 21:34

It’s a French bulldog, he started with reflux vomiting last year, vet said it’s just ageing and the breed.

We’ve never been able to housetrain him - I have another dog who was fully housetrained in weeks but for some reason we never could train the frenchie fully

Agree with this. Make it "not your problem."
spotcheck · 28/03/2022 21:54

Get yourself to YouTube and watch the carpet cleaning videos. Mesmerising....

Bettysnow · 28/03/2022 22:46

No definitely get rid. Apart from a health hazzard it will stink to high heaven and the dog will keep using it.
Id also get the dog back to the vet for further tests he really doesn't sound well

Somuddled · 29/03/2022 06:00

Oh come on, no semi reasonable MIL wants you to keep a pissy, shity, vomit rug in your house! Just throw the damn thing out.

carefullycourageous · 29/03/2022 06:02

That is gross, of course get rid. But where will your dog vomit/shit instead???

Seriously, how can you live with a dog that is not house-trained?

Dinoteeth · 29/03/2022 06:07

I'm another who'd bin it.

At an absolute push I'd consider replacing it but I think that could be throwing good money after bad. But is it "protecting" a fitted carpet underneath it.

LndnGrl · 29/03/2022 07:24

How big is it? Can it fit in the big washing machine in the launderette? If it can take it there and wash it in white vinegar. That should get rid of the smell the dog keeps going back to. That's what you need to get rid of, the dog now associates the rug by smell as a toilet.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 29/03/2022 08:21

Are you not at least using puppy pads for the dog? Or putting him/her in a room with hard floors when you can't be there to supervise?

I'm generally not a fan of puppy pads but they're far better than the dog pissing and shitting all over the floor 🤢

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/03/2022 08:25

Unless you are washing it with biological washing liquid, you are not breaking the proteins down and your dog is associating the smell with “this is my toilet place”. Throw it and he won’t have an association. And if you can’t house train him then use puppy pads.

I’d try getting a professional in to shampoo/clean it first (if you like the rug that is? If not, just chuck it)
