I don't sit for longer than 30 minutes at a time

After reading that statistically every hour you sit reduces your life expectancy by 22 minutes, I try to get up and stand or walk around every 30 minutes, even at work (I work at an office). I always get up during ad breaks too. AIBU? There's many studies adding evidence to the negative impacts of sitting, and the positives of activity, even if it's just standing and walking.

I hardly ever sit still. When I worked in an office I always walked two flights up to the photocopier room rather than have stuff collected. That was over 40 years ago. After I became a teacher I was very lucky to sit down for more than 20 minutes to have my lunch.

SantaHat · 28/03/2022 11:52

Why would you be unreasonable? It’s your life. Move as much and as often or as little as you like. You don’t need our approval.

Sparklingbrook · 28/03/2022 11:54

Bit annoying in the theatre.

ChaToilLeam · 28/03/2022 11:58

As long as you’re not in front of me in the cinema, go right ahead!

I don’t particularly like sitting for long periods either, prefer to be able to move about.

That's why I rarely go to the theatre. I really can't sit still. These days I would probably be diagnosed as Hyperactive but I'm 67 and I can't say it has adversely affected my life.

😂Yes it does depend where you are, people who can't sit still are also annoying. I sit down for longer than 30 mins (work or tv) but also go for long walks.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/03/2022 12:04

My initial thought was how do you manage long drives!

Marchingredsoldiers · 28/03/2022 12:04

I am like that. Not by choice. My job is so effing stressful that I can no longer relax sufficiently to sit for longer than an hour.

Nice to think that the non-sitting may cancel out the life-shortening stress Grin

Googlecanthelpme · 28/03/2022 12:09

That’s a good habit.

Although if the evidence based on the total sitting hours or is it the length of continuous sitting?

Because I don’t get up that much during the day whilst I’m working, sometimes I’ll sit for a few hours at a time.

However I do a long dog walk every day, I run a lot and I have two energetic kids to deal with on the nights and weekends.

So my total sitting time won’t be high over the week.

GFFord · 28/03/2022 12:18

I think the study was based on continuous sitting, though I think total sitting hours would apply too. Here's a link explaining the findings:

I barely move at work
Can't stand and type so only move on my breaks/lunch. Often sit for 3hrs at a time

tcjotm · 28/03/2022 12:30

@regthetabbycat 😂

I read things like sitting is the new smoking and just despair. I’ve never smoked and goddamn it, I’m going to sit if I want to. At least I’ll die comfy before they ruin something else.

No good comes from studies! 😂

(I kid, I kid. I’m pro science, I just wish science would focus more on cures rather than helpfully pointing out all the things I’m doing that are going to kill me. Because at 45 there seem to be a lot and either way I’m going to die).

ChnandlerBong · 28/03/2022 12:30

please just suit yourself.

no one has called you unreasonable so what is the purpose of the post!? are you trying to convert everyone?

I have a standing desk I can use up or down and change position all the time. Could that be a possibility ?
MrOllivander · 28/03/2022 12:32

@Helenluvsrob nope, I WFH so it's my own desk at the minute
Desks are joined in the office so can't be altered

AliceAbsolum · 28/03/2022 12:50

Yes! I'm like this. Always up and about, I find sitting for long periods oddly distressing

theemmadilemma · 28/03/2022 13:00

I never sit still for long. I have to really be in the mood otherwise I'm always up and down 'just quickly doing x, y or z'.

Yes, my immediate thought went to people who rely on wheelchairs. Hopefully some flaws in the study!
tcjotm · 28/03/2022 13:08

@MrOllivander if it’s any consolation, I didn’t find a standing desk comfortable at all. I’m all for standing up for phone calls, quick meetings etc, but I did not find it good for typing.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/03/2022 13:12

It's a good idea and really I should do something similar. I spend a lot of time sitting and my hips are much less mobile than they should be. When I used to work I had periods when I was just thinking intently about something and I literally wouldn't move at all for maybe 20 minutes and my neck used to stiffen into the thinking position. I find constant fidgeters very annoying (like DH for instance) but they are definitely more limber than me.

Hatinafield · 28/03/2022 13:13

God. Could probably sit from now until my death without needing to move other than for food/a wee Grin

I've just spent 5 weeks lying in a hospital bed so I was thinking the same as you lol 😂
