I'm losing my mind over 6 year olds CONSTANT cough!

I know it isn't her fault and she can't help it but I am currently sat here irrationally angry at her because once again I am awake and not sleeping because she's constantly coughing at night. She is awaiting an ENT appointment - but so far heard nothing and not likely too any time soon (there were no appointments at any of the hospitals when I tried to book on the referall site). I've spoken to so many GP's about this and nobody can agree on what it is. She isn't asthmatic (or that's what they tell me despite nobody doing a single test!), she apparently has large tonsils but again nobody is doing anything about them, she's been given antihistamines to take daily that do absolutely NOTHING. Her behaviour is disgusting because she is sleep deprived, my patience with both of my children is 0 because I am so sleep deprived, my hair is falling out in handfuls because I am stressed and tired and run down constantly. I have work tomorrow and I haven't got a clue how I'm going to get through with yet another night of no sleep, she has school and I feel like I shouldn't send her in - but then she would literally never be in school. She's already academically behind her peers. It's like the GP just hears what I'm saying and shrugs. I understand that it's nothing compared to what alot of people are going through but she has had a persistent night time cough since she was 2 and it's only getting worse and not one GP has actually helped her in those 4 years and the lack of sleep is making go insane.

She does get a few weeks of respite sometimes but then it's straight back to constant coughing. There is no rhyme or reason to it, but it's seriously making our lives miserable.

@ClaireandTed

The brown inhaler is good because it is a preventer, rather than the blue which is for relieving immediate symptoms. If they offer you blue, do ask for the brown as well.
They only prescribe "brown inhaler" which is becotide for adults usually - it's clenil for young childrenA and for when asthma is diagnosed

Ventolin salbutamol of smaller children version salumol is blue inhaler which GP would prescribe first if GP thought nighttime cough may be asthma related (source: in medical field and also severe asthmatic , with DCs who are asthmatic)

@KevinTheKoala

Sorry for the late reply, unfortunatley my DD ended up being sick and then we both crashed out. Honestly I know how exhausted she is as well and I am getting her cared for as best I can. To answer a few questions:
  • she already sleeps propped up on pillows
  • rarely drinks milk
  • we live in rented accommodation so everywhere is carperted unfortunatley but we don't have pets
  • she was given an inhaler by 1 GP years ago that I do remember helping but then when we moved and had to swap GPs they refused to give her another one to try.
  • she has been given anti histamines to try and reduces the swelling in her tonsils.
  • unfortunatley I cannot afford to go private.
Great update OP so you have a lot in place- well done xxx . I hope you've been able to read through and see what might be helpful to your DD's situation and how she presents and what is maybe unrelated

Many suggestions on here. But I agree with others back to GP and discuss " would inhalers help? Can we try bronchodilator type inhalers please?" as this is rather extreme and DD is sleep deprived and so are you

bramblen · 28/03/2022 20:01

Felt I had to reply after similar experience with ds8 he had a cough for 3 months and it was awful! I really feel your pain. We tried everything and I mean everything. Eventually begged the doctor to try asthma treatment as it was the last thing left to try...( we already tried everything from natural remedies to treating acid reflux.

The inhalers worked, he has clenil

The cough was torture for him and us, his whole body was tired, pulled muscles etc. hope you get answers soon

Your poor DD. Mine would cough all night too and yes it was asthma. They put her on montelukast at first, and then inhalers. I agree you need to get a second GP to see her and if they refuse, I agree take her to A&E next bout of night time coughing. The fact she is coughing until she throws up is very concerning.

An air purifier is a better option than a humidifier. But both are costly.

Sotired22 · 28/03/2022 20:09

A humidifier doesn’t have to be costly, mine was about £25 and it’s worked a treat (child has asthma and is on inhalers but still gets a night time cough through winter)

Chonfox · 28/03/2022 20:24

Any mould in your house at all? I had this when I lived in a house share. Took me forever to figure out what was wrong with me but It was from mould on the ceiling from the tumble dryer as housemates would never open a window when using it and the room would get wet with condensation.

I cleaned it away and bought a dehumidifier and the coughing completely stopped. best money ever spent! Never had a problem since.

I really feel for you and your DD as it's so debilitating when it encroaches on sleep and leaves everyone exhausted. Antihistamines make me lethargic and thirsty too for some reason so that won't be good for her every day. Hope you get to the bottom of it Flowers

We had this and an inhailer has solved the problem. I’d see another doctor. It was very stressful for us as she would sometimes
Cough for hours practically non stop.

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 28/03/2022 20:43

My DS developed a cough after the whooping cough vaccine but that was the first vaccine when very young and it went after a while.

Cornettoninja · 28/03/2022 20:51

I agree with @Polyanthus2 that reflux can often be overlooked as the cause of coughs. Ask your Pharmacist or GP for some advice on what you could try.

The treatments are all relatively harmless so worth a try whilst you’re waiting for ENT.

DimplesToadfoot · 28/03/2022 21:01

I know a couple of previous posters say get a humidifier, but in my GDs case we stopped her night time coughing when we tried a dehumidifier.

I hope you manage to get it sorted

TeethingBabyHelp · 28/03/2022 21:07

I have asthma and coughing is my main symptoms. If it gets severe I get breathless but very very rarely have a wheeze.

I would go again and insist on a trial of inhalers. If your GP refuses, ask that it's included on her medical record that they've refused and the rationale for why. Ventolin is such a relatively harmless drug, it baffles me as to why they're not trying it/

FruitToast · 28/03/2022 21:20

I'd push for an inhaler. Not going to cause massive issues if she hasn't got asthma but could really help. We kept being told there was no problem and it was just viruses so I took videos of her coughing at night, got support from nursery about how her cough was compared to the other children, went in with attitude, etc and the after all that saw a new doctor that immediately said asthma and gave her a brown (steroid) inhaler without me even providing the evidence. She was 4 at the time and 6 now and has hardly had a cough since then. She hadn't slept through due to coughing for 3 years, a week after starting her steroid inhaler she was sleeping all night.

oblada · 28/03/2022 21:26

This is crazy. With my youngest inhalers, brown and blue were literally the first thing we got handed out when we described our issue which was night time coughing leading to vomiting (in her case the link is due to v sensitive gag reflex due to other issues). She's not 2 yrs old yet. We had the inhalers within days and it has indeed helped massively. That and the better weather.
Does your DD get better/worse during the summer/winter? Has she been better/worse in other houses? Could be worth ensuring her room is as dust free as possible, checking the filling of the quilts and pillows. And badgering the GP. For you not to have any action plan is frankly appalling.

Thebig3 · 28/03/2022 21:30

Coughing at night can be one of the key symptoms of asthma, especially in children.

If you've had an inhaler and it worked then you must see another gp and insist on having it again.....I honestly can't understand why they won't give you one.

I would also go onto the asthma UK website and contact their helpline and speak to the asthma nurses on there they are very helpful. I have also found going with information from them pushed the GPS into listening more.

Do not be fobbed off. If this is asthma she is not too young to be diagnosed, my son was diagnosed at 2yrs old.

Claraw81 · 12/11/2022 21:55

Hi just wondered how your wee one is now, I am currently going through this...my daughter has coughed for 8 weeks solid!! I'm losing my mind

ozymandiusking · 12/11/2022 23:09

Hi, I'm sorry to heat about your child. Has anyone suggested that she has Bronchiectasis. ( Not Bronchitis) Google it and read, and see if any of the symptoms occur with her.
It is diagnosed with scan of the chest.
But if your G.P. can't even diagnose asthma I doubt he would be open to this idea.
When you see the specialists mention this to them, but I would have thought they would want to try inhalers first.
I do hope she imroves soon.

ozymandiusking · 12/11/2022 23:22

inproves soon!

Redkettle · 13/11/2022 08:42

My brother had problems like this for years. Saw every specialist went private he cut out dairy and it went way. Worth a try?

Chopssss · 27/03/2023 10:26

How is this response helpful to anyone? Please find something else to do with your time rather than putting other mothers down.

Earwegoagain · 27/03/2023 10:33

Get a humidity monitor (can’t remember actual name for it). Can buy on eBay for a couple pound. This will tell you whether a humidifier or dehumidifier could be useful.

Lots suggesting inhalers but you can also request steroid nose spray if you suspect it’s post nasal drip causing the cough. Esp if the antihistamines haven’t helped. Mometasone is one they can prescribe for children. ☕💐
