Possibly one of the most dull and boring AMAs ever sorry!!!BlushGrin

just a bit bored and thought I would do an AMA in case anyone had any questions about owning horses, jumping, riding, what it’s like to have horses, or anything else horse-related that anyone wanted to ask!

How much does it cost to own your own horse a year? So to feed it, stable it etc? People talk about how it's an expensive hobby but what are we truly talking!

TheNeverEndingOver · 27/03/2022 21:07

Do you think the horses like it.

Comedycook · 27/03/2022 21:10

Do you come from a very wealthy/posh background?

Redpriestandmozart · 27/03/2022 21:10

What level of showjumping do you compete in?

Dky4 · 27/03/2022 21:13

What do you do if you can't be bothered to exercise your horses. If you are feeling ill or away for a few days or stuck in work etc?

Tigofigo · 27/03/2022 21:22

Do you think it's OK for humans to use horses for their own benefit/entertainment in today's society? Won't it soon be seen on the same par as animals in the circus given show jumping horses often end up with injuries?

1987qwerty · 27/03/2022 21:45

Did you consider posting in AMA?

GuyFawkesDay · 27/03/2022 21:48

Are you on SEU

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 27/03/2022 21:49

Are you Zara Phillips?

@CoastalWave

So it really depends on a lot of things (where abouts in the country you live, what type of horse you have, what yard you’re at and what facilities it has… the list goes on) but I’ll break my costs down as an example!

My last horse was around £8k.
I’m over £500 per month for the stable, hay, water, yard facilities and bedding. I’m in a relatively inexpensive part of the country so if this was in a more expensive area this would probably cost double per month.

Saddles start at low hundreds for good ones but go up in price to thousands for fancier ones. They last a while with good care but have to be replaced and a horse grows and changes shape too which affects the fit of the saddle.

Insurance is usually £800+ per year. Mine was £850ish this year.

Farrier is £120 every 6 weeks.

Then there’s the dentist, physio, vaccinations, worming, as well as the cost of general bits and bobs like grooming kits, clothes, hats (my last was around £400 and had to be replaced after having it less than a week after a bad fall!), tack, treats, lessons (private lessons around £40 an hour). These are the costs people don’t think about but they really really add up. I was recently over 1k for a couple of rugs, saddle pads and new boots. Said boots got destroyed in the paddock and had to be replaced straight away!

It can be cheaper and you don’t always need the top of the range, most fancy tack or saddlery, but ultimately a horse will always cost a lot to keep and it’s bullshit when people say otherwise.

Not to mention vet bills. They can start in the hundreds and go up very very quickly to thousands. I knew someone who was left bankrupt after a horse had colic several times (insurance will only cover the first time). The bills can cost in the 5 figure region.

If I was to average all my spending and bills, I would say I’m around £800-£900 a month for my current horse, sometimes more but sometimes less.

Sorry for the long answer! Hope I explained it ok x

Zara Phillips is an eventer, not a showjumper. Way posher than SJ Grin

I stand corrected Grin
PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 27/03/2022 21:53

I have no idea what the difference is though!

Gonnagetgoing · 27/03/2022 21:54

Are drugs involved in getting to compete?

Gonnagetgoing · 27/03/2022 21:54

For the horses I mean

Gonnagetgoing · 27/03/2022 21:55

@Comedycook

Do you come from a very wealthy/posh background?
@Comedycook - you don’t have to! 2 cousins of mine do this and they’re not wealthy or posh.
MurmuratingStarling · 27/03/2022 21:57

I have a question.

Why did you put this on AIBU - and not HERE where it was meant to go?

Troton2022 · 27/03/2022 21:58

Honestly, yes and no.

I’ve seen horses that absolutely love to jump, school, hack etc and I would say they seem to enjoy it.

But on the flip side, I’ve seen horses being ridden that are clearly miserable. It’s very sad, especially when other horse riders don’t consider that the horse isn’t enjoying it.

Most horse riders are kind and genuinely care about horses welfare though thankfully!

I used to show jump when I was younger.
Unfortunately fell away from it all when I moved away to uni

Polkadotties · 27/03/2022 21:59

@Gonnagetgoing

Are drugs involved in getting to compete?
The anti doping rules for horses are super strict.
Darkstar4855 · 27/03/2022 22:00

YABU.

PinkSyCo · 27/03/2022 22:01

How can you tell whether horses enjoy it or not?

Emelene · 27/03/2022 22:05

What age did you start riding? Do you recommend it as a hobby for young girls or is it likely to get very expensive fast?

CaptainThe95thRifles · 27/03/2022 22:05

ultimately a horse will always cost a lot to keep and it’s bullshit when people say otherwise

Well, relatively speaking, that depends on how you keep them - if you keep a straightforward horse on grass livery without facilities, don't insure for vet bills (which is a bad idea if you don't have substantial savings), keep them barefoot etc, it's a fraction of the costs you quote. Obviously it'll still be more expensive than knitting but it's not necessarily huge amounts of money if you're not trying to compete at the higher levels.
