Buying used vehicle cash

47 replies

HappyGoDucky · 27/03/2022 13:41

We are in the market for a second vehicle (work), my husband has already privately sold his last van. We are cash buyers. Found an ideal replacement 200 miles from home from what looks like a reputable used commercial trader/showroom. They will deliver, all good. My issue is that they won't accept deposit by credit card, will only take debit card or bank transfer. The balance to be paid before van is released for delivery will also be bank transfer.

Is this usual practice? Aibu to be concerned that we won't have section 75 protection? Do we have any recourse if something was to go wrong? We need the van ASAP.

@Chasingsquirrels

No VAT on a £30k purchase??
Why would there be VAT on a used, retail car?
HappyGoDucky · 27/03/2022 15:57

@bellac11

Is it an unusual car or will one likely pop up a bit nearer to you
Slightly unusual but comes with the security features and towing options we need for our kit. So its ready to go. We need ASAP , weds by latest 😬

@DDouble2BubbleNot

There are a huge amount of car, van, motorhome, bike scammers around. Eg I've seen the same vehicle on various sites With slightly different info

Always view the vehicle in person

A friend paid in full & vehicle was never delivered & it was reported to the police

You can look up the MOTS online

Thanks DDouble. We are actually pretty experienced in buying both new and used cars. Things seemed to have changed as all the dealers that we have contacted operate the same way.

You've kind of made a rod for your own back, needing it so urgently.

Not accepting the credit card payment isn't in itself enough to imply "dodgy" and you do have some pretty strong consumer rights regardless in this instance; and it sounds like they have a reputation to protect so...

I'd probably just bite the bullet based on everything you've said. But the car will most likely be good if it's costing so much anyway.

Bigtruth · 27/03/2022 16:05

Oh just to add, pay balance on receipt of vehicle, not before.

Thanks @Bigtruth. New van needed as DH was layed off without notice so new business set up. Had to sell our car first (not part ex as needed maximum price) to fund van. Work booked in later this week.

@Bigtruth they won't do this, they'll on release the vehicle for delivery once funds are in their account. That's why I'm uncomfortable nit having S75 on the deposit (therefore covering the full £30k).

I thought there was protection on debit cards over a certain amount?

HappyGoDucky · 27/03/2022 16:24

Only chargeback and that isn't actually a legal right. Besides you can o ly chargeback the amount paid on the card so in this case just the small deposit....

@R00K

I'd walk away amd loom for something a lot closer to home. Also, as its a b2b/trade transaction, distance selling regs don't apply either.
Also, as its a b2b/trade transaction, distance selling regs don't apply either. S75 doesn't apply to b2b transactions either, it's a consumer right.
PurpleDrain · 27/03/2022 16:43

Please don’t pay 30k without seeing it and having it first. Imagine how sick you will feel if it never turns up.

HappyGoDucky · 27/03/2022 16:50

Ah, OK @daimbaratemydogsbone, so S75 is irrelevant anyway. Urgh!

Are they a small dealer? They may just not want to pay the credit card charges.
I wouldn't pay £30k for something I hadn't seen though.

bellac11 · 27/03/2022 17:03

Can you get the train and then cab to the seller? For something that price I would want to see it in person

Escarpahell · 27/03/2022 17:06

For that kind of money I'd be renting a car to go and physically look at the car. Ask for a discount equal to the cost of a day's car hire.

Good luck with that! cars are selling like hotcakes, without a deposit it will probably sell
edufood · 27/03/2022 20:32

Check your rights on buying a car unseen (distance selling rules) you have 12 months to get a full refund.

Even branded garages won't take cc transactions above approx £2k as it costs too much.

edufood · 27/03/2022 20:33

The real answer though is to go and see it!

Can you be any more wrong?
burnthur5t · 28/03/2022 12:54

If you aren't happy, walk away

This is their rules. Accept them or don't

RealBecca · 28/03/2022 13:01

It costs them loads in fees to process a credit card. Most can swallow it for a deposit but will depend how large they are.

RealBecca · 28/03/2022 13:02

But no, I wouldn't personally transfer 30k to someone 200 miles away.
