Aibu to hate gifting

UniQuery · 25/03/2022 21:45

It's giving isn't it? Or giving a present?

WTf is gifting?

Urgh yes.

Especially in shops that have a ‘gifting’ section filled with crap that no one would want in their own houses.

RedWhiteOrBlue · 25/03/2022 21:49

The focus is on the giver on and not the recipient - therein lies the difference.

"I am gifting this to you" - be grateful
"Here's a gift" - hope you like it!

LosingTheWill2022 · 25/03/2022 21:53

I opened the thread ready to shriek "it's giving not gifting ffs!!'
🤣
Agree wholeheartedly OP

UniQuery · 25/03/2022 21:57

It is not actually a verb. A Gift is a noun. It's like for example an arse or a breast. Who would say I am arsing you a .... Or I am breasting you something?

RedWhiteOrBlue · 25/03/2022 21:58

Agree. It should be "gift giving".

Time40 · 25/03/2022 22:00

The word "present" seems to be dying out, which is a shame.

UniQuery · 25/03/2022 22:04

@phishy - v sorry. I don't follow threads that much but pleasing to hear that others are on my side

Me too! 😂

I hate it. I hate people saying I’ve been gifted x. No you’ve been given x!

Gosh! Never heard of this "complaint" before. So to me, this is the first time that I have commentated.
MothershipG · 25/03/2022 22:07

Yes! It totally sets my teeth on edge!

And I don't know why it irritates me so much I'm not usual bothered by new/different usages but this makes me want to scream.

Who started it & why??? It's not like we didn't already have perfectly functional words, what gap does it fill ??

justjuggling · 25/03/2022 22:11

Seems like a new thing?? Never heard it used until recently and yes, sets my teeth on edge every time I see/hear it!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 25/03/2022 22:13

I actually don’t mind it. And i do mind a lot of pointless neologisms.
I like the way it differentiates between general use of giving (eg. i gave her an extra cushion, give me a kiss, give this cuppa to your dad), and an actual intended present that you mean to transfer ownership.

Scuttlingherbert · 25/03/2022 22:14

I hate it too.

I also hate 'birthed'. Prefer 'gave birth to'.

Cambridge Dictionary has it listed as both a noun and a verb.

Are you going to be gifting your mothers something for mother day or just buying them some petrol station flowers as usual?

Smile

YA sooooooo NBA. A vile mangling of language.
It sounds so insincere to me too, like advertising copy or corporate speak.

RedWhiteOrBlue · 25/03/2022 22:22

Gifting is so patronising.

"Where is that arsing thing?" might not be grammatically correct but it still has its place in my expletive phrase book.

"Breasting the hill" and "Breasting a pheasant" are both legitimate uses of the verb "to breast".

Riseholme · 25/03/2022 22:23

The English language changes continuously.
I don’t say gifting but it will get used more often and that doesn’t bother me.
The exception for me is when period dramas use language that was definitely not in use at the time. Absolutely no need for it.

Pointlesspolice · 25/03/2022 22:25

Can honestly say that I have never heard this expression until literally a minute ago when I read your title!
