Why do nearly all decent cookers need to be hard wired in?

If anyone can send links of a decent 90cm gas range cooker that only requires a 13 amp plug, I will be eternally grateful.

I had thought that I'd found the perfect cookerbut on reading reviews of Belling Farmhouse, rust is a major issue.

We're moving house and the cooker has a non fan manky electric oven. The hob looks fine but we use the oven a lot. The kitchen does not have a 32 amp big cooker switch so my only option is a 13 amp plug in one. Otherwise it means ripping up the flooring in both the loung and dining room to run a cable for the cooker from the fuse box. My AIBU is why do people who renovate houses not think & put in the normal wiring for most cookers at the same time as doing other renovations. The house is lovely exept for the cooker. I've spent hours reading cooker specs and I'm pulling my hair out.

that Industrial connector would not be fitted to a house cooker

I know, but it would need to be if the cooker wasn’t hard wired to an appropriately rated circuit.

If it isn’t hard wired, a normal 13amp plug will suffice as you are not using 13amps

When we changed from gas to electric, the cable was put up into the wall, through the ceiling, then through coving to the consumer box. Think the electrician spent less than half a day sorting it. Not much upheaval at all. Maybe get an electrician out to give a quote. :)

I also suggest an air fryer for small things like fish fingers and oven chips, so much easier and quicker than waiting for an oven to heat up. You can get a decent one pretty cheap.

The smallest single oven version of the appliance I was referring to, a Belling Farmhouse Dual Fuel, has a maximum draw of 4780 Watts. At 240 volts that is just less than 20 amps.

Do you still think a 13 amp plug will suffice?

Dreamqueen · 26/03/2022 17:23

and thats why I'm so confused. different sites say different things re fitting. I've even phoned Belling and they're none the wiser.

No, because I didn’t know what power it was pulling, maximum pull is 3k for a pug.

Definitely hard wire required for a load like that

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/03/2022 19:50

I prefer 2 ovens because we usually just use one which is smaller than a single, large oven would be, so uses less gas.
Also, I cook meat in one and veggie food in the other which is a bit niche.
It is so handy to have two eg for a Christmas roast.

Exactly. Which is why I was surprised when the poster claimed that it wasn’t.

I have a Belling range cooker, 6 ring gas hob, hob warmer plate (electric), grill/small oven gas, 2 large gas ovens, a small warming oven low heat (electric) and only electric connection is a 13amp plug.
So it is possible, mine is 110cm width though.

Of course you only need a 13plug on it you are not pulling 3000watts.
BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2022 07:30

am worried about the energy consumption of it when having to heat up the big oven for something like a couple of fish fingers

You want an air fryer for this. Much quicker and cheaper.

But I can't see why a gas cooker would need a hardwired electricity connection because the only electricity it would use would be the spark and clock, which is nothing. Maybe the websites you're looking at are showing the wrong information?

mogsrus · 27/03/2022 07:37

Any cooker that is run totally on electric pulls more than 3000watts so needs it’s own circuit. A gas cooker with just a warmer & ignition such as ours will just need a plug, total consumption about 200 watts & that would be the warmer I would think.

What model Belling is this please? It sounds perfect.

Envy actual oven envy! yes that sounds very nice model please so I can begin to save

puffin23 · 27/03/2022 21:44

mine is over 20 years old, but they do similar models. trying to remember model name.. farmhouse i think.
just looked at farmhouse 100G 100cm at AO and that is just 13amp plug required. I has 7 burners, so warmer plate and fourth cavity is just storage, not warming oven, but I rarely use mine anyway, unless you are into making bread.

puffin23 · 27/03/2022 21:50

that should be no warmer plate! and I tend to use warmer oven just for storing roasting tins, baking trays etc.

Hmmph · 27/03/2022 21:56

I can’t help with the actual model, but Belling is made by the same people as Stoves, so should be a decent make.

And also, having just bought a 13 amp plug in gas (built under) oven and grill, you can email customer service to ask if it has a plug, which I did!

Just a warning though, some cookers have very very long (months) waiting times due to steel...

mogsrus · 28/03/2022 06:35

Farmhouse 100 G. Is a total gas cooker,so you need electric to operate ignition, clocks etc so of course it comes with a plug, it’s pulling about 1watt. The fact still remains, all cookers electric that pull 3000w need own circuit

Caspianberg · 28/03/2022 07:01

I’m not sure why new cables would need to go under the floor?
Our entire house has been recabled recently, it was all cabled through the walls, and that’s where all the old stuff was also. So they just channel out wall ( making a huge mess), to new space. Then fill and re plaster.
