To be jealous of incompetent colleagues who seem to progress so easily?

Just a rant really so apologies...

We had a lady join our team in Jan doing exactly the same role as me. She's been the business for years. On a personal level, she is lovely. I've never known anyone talk as much as her! Work wise, her output is terrible. She is slap dash, rushes everything and doesn't listen to requests so she always misses the mark. I find myself having to correct her work constantly and she relies on me a lot.

I found out recently she is paid £10,000 more than me and she's just landed a new role and as a result, she'll be getting a 4k payrise.

Meanwhile, I recently had an interview in a similar role and was rejected.

I am of course, incredibly jealous and I know it's not a very nice trait but for the love of god, how does this happen?! How is it that those with the gift of the gab progress so easily and the rest of us that actually do the work get left behind!

Stop doing this - be too busy or flag it up to higher ups.

I'ev worked with people who did every little but made sure everyone knew what they had done - many had impression they were working their socks off - while many others worked very hard and thought it would be seen - and it wasn't.

Other option is to job hunt and try another work place.

I can completely understand your frustration. What you need to do now is understand what you need to do to get a promotion. Have you asked for feedback as why you didn’t get the role? X

Thatswhyimacat · 25/03/2022 11:17

Always remember that promotions aren't decided on whether or not you're good at your current job - in fact, if you show yourself as too good in your current job it often actually works against you. People who keep their head down and get on with xyz aren't doing anything to display the skills needed to progress higher, which is often more about how you connect with others rather than how accurate you are in your work.

@gotajobthrunepotism I've asked for feedback but have yet to receive it Sad

Unfortunately, confidence and the gift of the fab are often more important at interview than actual skills. It seems to blind people.

Definitely don’t do her work though!

They tend to promote people out of trouble where I work. Get them in positions where all they do is have meetings all day & relay info. If you're good at your job there's no chance.

Nicholethejewellery · 25/03/2022 11:25

To get promoted you need to demonstrate that you are the perfect candidate for the role you want, not the perfect person for the one you've already got. Being excellent at your job shows that you're in the right place in an employer's eyes.

Remember in business it's not what you know or what your can do that counts, it's the perception the people in authority have of you that matters. It's better to be useless but thought of highly if your aim is progression. A lot of people aren't suited to bullshitting in this way so get overlooked.

It's a risk of course, because sometimes the bullshitter gets caught out - but that's the chance you have to take.
