Acne at 30 why?!

No idea where to post this!

For around 8 years I've suffered with facial spots/acne. Sometimes my face is quite clear but others I tend to get about 6 spots come up at once. I've tried spot creams and they just never seem to go. I never had spots during my teens so it's like I'm suffering for that now!!

Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of them or even any ideas as to what's causing them please? I feel so embarrassed having breakouts at 30!

There is a great article on the Canada Drugs website - "What Causes Acne in Adolescents and Adults? Dispel the Myths". It explains why adults, even those who didn't suffer with this problem before can have acne in diffenet age. The main reasons mentioned in this age are:

  • Hormones released at puberty.
- Hormonal changes related to pregnancy.
  • Medications such as lithium, corticosteroids, and testosterone and growth hormone (IGH) preparations used by athletes to increase muscle mass.
  • Stress (emotional or physical).

I always had acne and then in my late 20's I started to get horrible painful cysts on my jawline. By cutting out dairy it stops them appearing. I later found out my skin could tolerate butter and hard cheese and milk powder. My skin doesn't like cream cheese or cream, no idea about milk I am too scared to try as the spots last for months on end from a dairy outbreak.

Its a real effort to eliminate and I have to be so careful when eating out. I find Japanese/Asian food is safest, but check that e.g Thai restaurants don't add cow milk to their dishes (cheaper cream than coconut milk).

Plus if I cut out sugar and alcohol and eat loads of veggies my skin is lovely and clear.

oh and I don't wash my face with anything except water in the shower. It also helps if you don't pick at your face either. I think having the right Omega 3,6,9 makes your skin better from the inside out.

I have this too. I think it's hormone related and suspect I have PCOS, which causes spots (alongside excess chin hair, which I sadly also get).

I currently don't have any spots because I've found that if I use a very mild (not anti-breakout) face wash twice each day and make sure to dry my face very thoroughly and avoid applying face cream to the areas affected then they disappear. If I accidentally put face cream on the affected areas or forget to wash my face after conditioning my hair then it gets worse again.
