Somebody is coming over tomorrow to do a job and they only accept cash. I know this is their full time job (not a single mum doing a bit of ironing on the side).

AIBU?

Aibu.

What is your AIBU?

Hottubtimemachine · 24/03/2022 19:25

I’ve had this and it’s really annoying- having to go to the cash point every day for days on end to get the whole amount (no actual banks near me to withdraw the full amount).

Lockheart · 24/03/2022 19:26

Are you being unreasonable that someone else only accepts cash?

MuggleMadness · 24/03/2022 19:26

AIBU????

What are you asking?

Holidayreservation · 24/03/2022 19:27

Sorry million miles away.

That it just really annoys me. I have to get in my car to get cash and I’m presuming it’s cash in hand. They’re also charging the same amount as others for the same service so I’m presuming they’re pocketing the difference.

OP posts:
Tiger401 · 24/03/2022 19:27

Pocketing what difference, OP?

Unsureaboutit9 · 24/03/2022 19:29

That doesn’t mean it’s dodgy necessarily, but If they only take cash and there are other providers around that charge the same and take card then why not just use them?

Kay7766923 · 24/03/2022 19:30

I know where you're coming from. I got married last year and a lot of the services said I could pay by bank transfer but heavily emphasised the fact that most people pay by cash on the day as though that would be more convenient for me, no thanks.

BuanoKubiamVej · 24/03/2022 19:33

I would take my custom elsewhere. People who insist on cash are fiddling their taxes and basically stealing from the rest of us who are honest. I therefore cannot trust them to supply any kind of service.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/03/2022 19:34

Is this a cleaner?

Taking cash only does not mean someone isnt paying tax. There are a lot of really good reasons for taking cash.

  1. Dont have to pay for a card machine or the percentage fee they take.
  2. Dont have to check online banking to ensure customers have paid and then chase them up when they haven't.
  3. If they are overdrawn on their account but need money to buy food then they cash is necessary. A bank transfer would he swallowed up by their overdraft and therefore, not accessible. They can pay off their overdraft as they can afford it whilst still being able to buy food.

Many other reasons but you get the idea, yes?

Tiger401 · 24/03/2022 19:34

@BuanoKubiamVej you’re gonna be maaaad when you learn about tax loopholes

You can’t possibly know that
Tiger401 · 24/03/2022 19:35

@BeforeGodAndAllTheFish nice to see someone with some common sense!

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 24/03/2022 19:35

What's the issue, exactly?

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/03/2022 19:36

@BuanoKubiamVej

No, they are not.

But if your concern is to avoid anyone who might not he paying their full share of tax, do you also avoid every company in the UK doing it? Amazon, Starbucks, all the hundreds of others? Or is it just low paid people like cleaners, window cleaners, handmen that you refuse to give your custom?

Theunamedcat · 24/03/2022 19:37

Cash guarantees payment though they might have been burned by a charge back

This is lazy and childish thinking. Just because someone will only take cash does not mean they're committing tax evasion.
LabelMaker · 24/03/2022 19:45

YABU just find someone else to do it if it bugs you that much

BarbaraofSeville · 24/03/2022 19:54

Well bank transfer would be easiest all round, and it's not hard to check their account on their phone, they could do this before they leave the OPs house.

I suppose the point about being overdrawn might be relevant, although there's far better ways of managing cashflow that wouldn't mean money is swallowed up, such as putting the spend on a credit card, likely to be cheaper and would be completely free for a few weeks.

I'm surprised they're still willingly accepting cash, after all, they have to risk loss/theft and use it up if they're not planning to bank it, which is also a chore in itself.

No. Bank transfers are not easier "all round." It would just be easier for you.
lostoldname · 24/03/2022 20:04

If it's a builder ask for a bank transfer and receipt.

pinguwings · 25/03/2022 07:10

Being paid by cash can be a complete pain for a legitimate business.

Everything goes through our books so it can be properly accounted for. That process is pretty simple when it's a bank transfer but takes far longer going to a bank, cashing in and receipting each separate transaction. Then manually updating all our accountancy system.

It does my head in when customers offer to pay by cash as if they're doing you a favour. Fine if that's their preferred way of paying, but if you are thinking I'm going to be dishonest about taxes then why would you trust me to be honest about my work?

Thank you @pinguwings - I was called lazy and childish for thinking this was the case and choosing to direct my custom to businesses that operate with a formal accounting system that generates a paper trail.
clpsmum · 25/03/2022 11:45

Don't use them if you're not happy

Meandthesky · 25/03/2022 11:50

Why are you paying to use a service if you’re not happy with how they do business? You mentioned other companies who charge the same and presumably accept bank transfer so why not just use one of those?
