Changing jobs during mortgage application?

I have been at my current job for just under a year, I like it but I am really unhappy with the salary. There is currently no scope for progression. With a lot of saving and luck that my partner is on a high salary we have just had our offer accepted on a gorgeous house in a lovely area of the city we live in. I have also seen a vacancy for a senior role that I'm interested in that pays 5k more with far more scope for progression. I have applied and have an interview in the diary. We have applied for our mortgage already but are still relatively early on in the process. I've asked our broker about whether we should go for it as I'm very aware that lenders like you to be in a job for at least 6 months. He said to go for it but I'm not entirely sure whether this is accurate as I've heard that it could mess up getting the mortgage completely and affect our chances of getting another! Does anyone have any experience in this or can offer advice?

I changed jobs during the application process. I never even said a word to our broker as it was after all the checks were done. Have your checks been done and bank statements been seen?

Depends on the lender, some are fine if same field and continuous employment. Others may ask for three months pay slips, or a letter from new employer confirming probation period.

How far along the application process are you?

Make the application as you are now. Send in bank statements and payslips to back it all up. Then if you move after mortgage offer - dont say a word. Not even to your broker (as he is obliged to tell the lender).

You can apply now and use your current bank statements, the mortgage offer is usually valid for 6 months (but check your specific offer) so as long as you exchange and complete in this time, all good. Keep in mind though that if anything unexpected happens with the house purchase, it will add a whole load of extra pressure. I'm currently going through it and trying to scramble around to complete before the 6 months is up. Wouldn't do it again, stress levels are through the roof!

Where did you get the 6 months thing from thats not true at all. Of course go for it, more money wouldn't hinder you on a mortgage app 🙄 come on now people. Your broker has said its fine, so it's fine.

Once you've got your mortgage offer you'll be fine, don't bother to tell them or your broker if you change job. If you changed job before the offer then it's different, because they'd be making a decision based on incorrect information.

That's the crucial thing - when they make a decision it must be based on accurate information. They know that people's circumstances might change subsequently. I mean I got made redundant a few months after moving into my current home - but there's no logical reason why I should tell the mortgage provider even though I was earning less.

This happened to me and we had to apply for another mortgage as our offer ran out. It wasn’t an issue at all. This was with Santander, a good while ago but I can’t see why it would be a problem as long as you have a permanent job.

Arguably, getting a new and more lucrative job shows that you are more securely employed. Someone who has worked for the same company for years might have difficulty finding a new job if their company goes under - you've shown that you wouldn't.

Ohhh I’m sure there’s a commitment to tell them if you become aware of something which might change your circumstances. There was with mine… not telling them you’re being made redundant sounds like potential fraud. I doubt they’d be bothered about a move to a permanent post that pays more, especially as you’ve been in your current post for a relatively short time though.
