Building works causing a nuisance

Or rather the sheer volume of work vans/cars/lorries.

For about 12 months there has been new local authority housing being built at the start of our housing estate, roughly 50 homes, so many people are desperate for housing so this is great, no issue there.
However our only access to and from our street is via the road that is directly outside of the building site, the road is on a slope so you can't see what's coming either way when pulling onto it and leads to a busy main road. From the start there has been vans etc parked on one side of the road, making only enough room for one car to fit down, this was fine when they were leaving a gap in the middle for a passing place but over the past few weeks there has been more and more vans so they have stopped doing this and it's now causing issues. I had to stop and reverse back up the hill this morning as there was nowhere else to go, last week I had to bump up onto the grass verge because a lorry was parked blocking the full road.
There's been a lot of complaints to the council from us and neighbours and today we had a leaflet through the door basically apologising for the inconvenience but they will be continuing to park there until the works are complete, so tough shit basically.
I will add that there is a car park just over the main road that they could use to park in as it is only used by the businesses there in the evenings.

Aibu to not want to just put up with this for the next few months? Are they allowed to just disrupt everyone like this? Where do we even go from here if the council couldn't care less?

that doesn't seem acceptable to me. You probably need to band together on this though

TwoDaysOff · 24/03/2022 10:12

I agree. Power in numbers.

SeasonFinale · 24/03/2022 10:15

If the vehicles are parked in a way that whilst legal make it unsafe I would involve the police. Perhaps they would come along and assess the situation.

undermilkjug · 24/03/2022 10:15

The Council should have agreed a construction traffic management plan as a condition of the planning application. If so, it should be available online. It might be worth checking whether there is on, and whether the developer is complying with it.

Have you tried complaining to the considerate contractors scheme that I assume they are a part of. They might have signage up. I have always had luck with them in the past. Make sure you have photos of the parking.

peanutpancake · 24/03/2022 10:18

DH suggested we ask the police but I didn't want to waste anyones time, may give them a quick call and see what they say though. @undermilkjug ah I wasn't aware of this I will definitely have a look for that Thankyou!

I spoke to the site manager and he agreed to keep the passing place clear but said he couldn't do nothing about the volume of traffic as they are just really busy and to speak to the council if that isn't good enough. Of course the agreement about the passing place only lasted days and we're now back to it being blocked.

Agree there would be a traffic management plan so check that. I'd be yelling from the roof tops if it was preventing an emergency vehicle getting through too
They can't just cause a nuisance and shrug their shoulders over it

peanutpancake · 24/03/2022 10:24

I have found the traffic management plan and it states that all adjacent roads and pavements shall be kept clear at all times, clearly this isn't being met so if I now bring this to the attention of the council will they have to do something about it?

Definitely raise it to the relevant authorities. What if there was an emergency and the ambulance or fire engines couldn't get through? They're putting lives at risk.

MrsMinge · 24/03/2022 10:32

Yes, it's there for a reason @peanutpancake, the person who wrote that letter to the residents is an idiot
Take photos to back up your concerns and ask others to as well
Best of luck

peanutpancake · 24/03/2022 10:35

Thankyou all for your help, I will draft up a letter this afternoon. There are a lot of elderly in the street and I'd hate to think help couldn't get through to them in an emergency.

I'd copy the relevant bit of their planning consent and send it to the boss of the building firm along with photographic evidence. Tell them you've already spoken to the site manager.
Also send the letter and photos to the Planning Department and Highways dept of your local authority.
I've lived surrounded by building sites a number of times and fortunately in our case a word with the site manager has usually worked.

woodpecker2 · 24/03/2022 14:32

Considerate contractors scheme do seem to have powers over the site manger so worth complaining to them anyway.

Your local councillor should advocate for you at the council as that letter is bang go out order.
