AIBU re starters and slow eaters

Out with family for tea last night. We were eating a bit later than usual and all hungry (and verging on hangry). DSS who is a young adult decides to have a starter. Everyone else having mains.

He's the slowest eater in the entire world. Good on him that he eats slowly, supposed to be better for you. But it meant we didn't get our mains for 45 long hungry red wine fueled minutes.

AIBU to ban him from having starters unless everyone is? This isn't actually possible of course - but ... really?

@RedHelenB
Err no it just means you’re ready for a meal. It’s not necessary to eat more than normal

How annoying. We have this with someone but with drinks rather than food. She practically licks the top of her drink rather that sipping it. Her husband, DH and I sit there glaring at her for ages whilst she is oblivious 😂 😤 DH and I have decided that next time we’re definitely not going into rounds with them because it’s agonising having to wait!

Starters are the best part of eating out IMO. I look forward to them so much, and really relish them. So I don't think it's fair to ask him not to have one, but perfectly reasonable to ask them to bring the one starter out with the mains.

FrenchBoule · 24/03/2022 14:18

If I want a starter I order one regardless whether anybody else is having one or not.

I can understand your frustration but have a word with the waiting staff next time. Your DSS is not at fault here.

@FrenchBoule
Do you not feel a bit weird being the only one to order a starter and eating when no one else?

JustJam4Tea · 24/03/2022 14:27

@FrenchBoule would you mind if your starter was brought out with everyone's main?

5 of us out for a meal.....friend B says in the car she has had an awful day at work and missed lunch so says she is starving.

We get into the rstaurant and the chef is at the bar.
He says there is a big party due soon so if we get our order in quick we can get serve quickly.

Friend A says who is having a starter,B says no I just want my main quick I have a headache.

A orders a starter then sits down.After a few minutes changes her mind and picks a different starter.
She totally held everything up and we waited ages for our mains......for this and many many selfish episodes I dont bother with her anymore

Have you said anything to him about this? How old is he?
it is rude when eating out to order a starter when nobody else does - or if you do you should ask first and that would have been your opportunity to say "we're starving so we'll order the mains to come at the same time"
