Does anyone go hunting or fishing or do anything 'woodsman' like?

I have a real urge to drop my life and go live in the woods alone. never go shopping or mess about with school run. Just go take my family and build a small dwelling and cook by fire pits and drink from the hopefully not polluted stream.

But I'm unfortunately in the real world so instead I'd like to try my hand at hunting or fishing but live in a city and know nobody at all who does either. I expect you need a licence or permission.
I am in the Midlands. Does anyone have a clue where I'd start?

Search for Bushcraft courses or experiences.

I have seen YouTube videos but didn't know there are courses. Thanks!

Start by going on short hiking trips. Learn to appreciate and read nature.

My dad used to hunt and forage. Foraging is great fun. I often do it on hikes.
Hunting needs to be done by someone experienced, so you need to learn how to gut a caucus first...

If you've got access to a garden, pitch a tent and live in that for a week, with no trips to shops, no use of toilet, shower, running water etc.
See how you feel at the end of the week.

Watch Mark Boyle on Ben Fogle, broadcast date was around feb ‘21. He lives in an offgrid cabin without technology, grows food and fishes. He also wrote a column in the Guardian a few years back.

Do you camp with your family?
You can practice some skills like firemaking, foraging (obvs be very very careful!), Shelter building and fishing etc while living outdoors to give you the feel for it.

Forest School Camps

Could you find someone local who fishes and ask if you could tag along. Most coastal towns would have fishing trips you can book into kj

hdjdjehhdhdvsv · 23/03/2022 07:19

I have been camping and forraged but nothing proper. Just got a book for Christmas this year on forraging and am loving it. Only trying what I can already identify stingers and dandelions

I do like it. I feel like that calls to me. But I also have small Children so can't realistically get away.

I am so barrassed but @Ylvamoon what's a caucus? Blush

There’s a new tv programme called the simpler life starting tonight - not sure what channel. It’s not exactly hunting and fishing but it’s a group of people living a summer in Devon like the Amish.

Could you ask around friends or at work if they know anyone who goes fishing who could take you along and teach you?

LynetteScavo · 23/03/2022 07:29

I'm guessing caucus = carcass

The Simpler Life program was kn last night - they are a few fish from a pine and planted some greens and had an argument about a £17 chicken from the local shop Grin

Camping in your garden is not going to achieve what you're looking for. You need to take your children on a holiday somewhere remote. Cook for them outdoors, walk in woods, swim in a lake, but I'd suggest somewhere with a tap for drinking water. Maybe start by plucking a chicken and see how you get on with that.

For the record I don't hunt or fish or forage for my food.

EdithStourton · 23/03/2022 07:56

It depends on exactly what you're after, or if you want a range of foraging (plants and fungi) or hunting (animals).

There are lots of FB groups for both. If you can find a ferreting/ sighthound group you could probably find someone to take you rabbiting. Or try a country show and chat to people on various stands.

Flight00Fancy · 23/03/2022 09:53

How about visiting a County Fair, they are usually held over a weekend. You can see country crafts, farm animals, displays etc

Secondly, there are lots of Facebook groups for wild camping, family camping, country walks, bushcraft etc
