What is the problem with being woke?

OP posts:
Grantanow · 23/03/2022 09:40

Depends on the individual but some go on about inclusion to the exclusion of other worthwhile topics (they are boring) and some are hypocritical virtue signallers (also boring). Mixed lavatories are quite common in France where they seem perfectly acceptable. Why should anyone be affronted by the sight of a urinal?

MyLittlePhonyPony · 23/03/2022 09:43

It's not the urinal that's objectionable. It's the penis.

Exposing a penis to a woman in any other circumstance is considered a grave matter. See Wayne Cousins.

Yet slap the word unisex on it and you have legitimised flashing.

By the way, proper unisex bathrooms are lockable single stalls with no gap, for obvious reasons.

Urinals + women being forced into the space does not a unisex space make.

Onlyforcake · 23/03/2022 09:45

I guess they think wanting to show others respect and consideration is a sign of weakness.

Guineapigssweak · 23/03/2022 09:54

Because the so called Woke Brigade are fruit loops!! They do more harm than good. One example 'chest feeding' ???? Need I go on? Lol

EricCartmansMagicalUnderpants · 23/03/2022 09:55

Chest feeding. Fucking ridiculous.

ChiselandBits · 23/03/2022 10:17

@Onlyforcake that really is insulting and lazy to many of us on here who have explained carefully what our nuanced view is on the current meaning of woke and why we therefore use it in a desirory way. To me it ironically now represents the very opposite of consideration, respect and inclusion.

ilovesooty · 23/03/2022 10:35

@carefullycourageous

Because people who are racist, sexist, generally awful have to try to make themselves feel better.

Anyone using 'woke' as an insult is a dickhead.

Agree it is the current version of calling someone PC.

Agreed.

The woke are insulting and lazy. It's unclear if they are unable to understand or whether it's deliberate. They won't behave any differently here than it will be when they're in their pack on twitter / insta etc, baying for someone's blood for wrong think. Online foxhunting. They love it. It's what they do best. It makes them proud and virtuous with minimum personal effort.

Your post was completely pot kettle black

Nah. I don't make a habit of doxing and destroying people's lives myself.

GrolliffetheDragon · 23/03/2022 11:43

I understand the origins of woke in a positive sense. Unfortunately the people I know who would probably self describe as woke are incredibly annoying about it. They make sweeping generalisations while also insisting you must never assume anything about anyone, loudly beat themselves up in public if they feel they've not performed wokeness to a suitable level - and it is a performance for these people, lets be honest - which just comes across as attention seeking.

So the concept is fine, unfortunately in real life I understand why it has ended up often being used as an insult because the people who are woke in a performative way are insufferable.

DdraigGoch · 23/03/2022 11:46

@Girlmumdogmumboymum

I think they like to put others down who are thoughtful and considerate of the impacts of issues on other people's lives, they see it as a weakness, instead of just getting on with life and offending who the fuck they want without repercussion.

I see it as a warning sign that people are just obnoxious and not really worth my time.

Lots of "woke" people aren't very thoughtful and considerate of women when they're calling them "TERFs" and "bigots" for wanting privacy and dignity.
DdraigGoch · 23/03/2022 11:52

@Kendodd

I remember when the term 'do gooder' was an insult. Grin
It was used to mean someone who meant well but who was a bit clueless/naive, sometimes to the extent of doing more harm than good.
Fimofriend · 23/03/2022 11:52

It is not a bad thing being woke but if someone keeps telling you that they are woke it is a sign that they are not. Just like the type of people, who keep monologuing about how polite British people are, are never polite.

Nicholethejewellery · 23/03/2022 11:54

"Woke" is an insult because it means someone has a stereotypical way of thinking that can easily be pigeonholed. It's the same as calling someone a liberal, a conservative, a reactionary, a fascist etc., just name calling (often) because their behaviour and attitudes are predictable and obvious to everyone but themselves.

DdraigGoch · 23/03/2022 11:58

@WomanStanleyWoman

Just this week a whole group of people, mainly with BLM in their profiles mounted a campaign to get a black actress fired because she posted about protecting women's sports on her Instagram.

So supporting BLM means you must never, ever disagree with a black individual?

No, but it certainly means that you shouldn't bully them. Especially when their only "crime" was speaking up for fairness in sport. You can campaign against fairness in sport if you like, but you must respect the right of others to disagree with you.

It's notable though that many of those so-described (usually white, privileged middle class people) seem to think that they know more about racism than black people, and profess to speak for them. They then go on to call said black people "traitors" if they don't do what's expected of them (voting Labour for example). That's racist.

Or how "I'm a nice guy" is code for "I'm an incel".

It really is racist. Very grim.

DrKNOWSALL · 28/02/2024 15:32

The reason woke is bad it is a senseless belief that accomplishes nothing but divisiveness. The objective of "wokeism" is to destroy what the minority finds offensive { common sense}, there is no practicality for it in society.

CheshireCat1 · 28/02/2024 15:35

The word has been weaponised by the right.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/02/2024 15:40

Are zombies woke?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/02/2024 16:13

Probably because woke goes hand in hand with purity spiral virtue signallers who follow a set list of group think ideas, from which they cannot deviate, and they make sure other people know how good and virtuous they are. These people who generally do nothing (themselves) to actually make other people's lives better at all. At least they're easy to spot and avoid though.

Exactly. I'm well aware what 'woke' used to mean.l, but words change meaning over time. People defending wokery seem to be implying that there can't possibly be anything negative about having woke views, but that's not true at all. 'Being kind' to one group of people can sometimes involve being unkind to another group. Allowing a biological male to undress in a changing room full of teenage girls in order to validate his feelings that he's a woman would be a good example of this.

Hmm Oh fgs. Why do people resurrect zombie threads?!

camelfinger · 23/03/2022 05:47

It’s the modern day equivalent of “political correctness gone mad”. I don’t see it as an insult, but it’s been twisted so that it is intended to be.

yes this. there is nothing wrong with being "woke"

Hollowgast · 28/02/2024 18:25

Roystonv · 23/03/2022 08:38

DesOP and anyone who still doesn't know why 'woke' is so hated as a word by so many now get over to the feminism threads and then you may understand. It used to mean awake to injustice which was good but no longer. There is a current thread rightly slating M and S for allowing in the name of being woke a man to review their period pants as so comfortable and absorbing when he wears them to ejaculate into. By being woke you are allowing companies, schools, shops, hospitals etc. to trample all over women and their rights. How can you be so naive.

Jesus Christ almighty. That's repulsive.
